yad etad bhagavān āha gaṇaḥ saptavidho raveḥ maṇḍale himatāpādeḥ kāraṇaṃ tan mayā śrutam //

vyāpārāś cāpi kathitā gandharvoragarakṣasām ṛṣīṇāṃ vālakhilyānāṃ tathaivāpsarasāṃ guro //

And the activities of the gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas, of the sages, of the Vālakhilyas, and likewise of the apsarases have been told, O teacher.

ViP 2 11.3

yakṣāṇāṃ ca rathe bhānor viṣṇuśaktidhṛtātmanām kiṃ tvādityasya yat karma tan nātroktaṃ tvayā mune //

And of the yakṣas on the chariot of the sun—(all of them) with their selves upheld by Viṣṇu's power. But what the work of the sun himself is, that has not been stated here by you, O sage.

ViP 2 11.4

yadi saptagaṇo vāri himam uṣṇaṃ ca varṣati tat kim atra raver yena vṛṣṭiḥ sūryād itīryate //

If the group of seven rains down water, cold, and heat, then what is the sun's part in this, by reason of which the rain is said to come from the sun?

ViP 2 11.5

vivasvān udito madhye yāty astam iti kiṃ janaḥ bravīty etat samaṃ karma yadi saptagaṇasya tat //

Why do people say "the sun has risen, he goes to the middle (of the sky), he sets," if that work belongs equally to the group of seven?

ViP 2 11.6

maitreya śrūyatām etad yad bhavān paripṛcchati yathā saptagaṇe 'py ekaḥ prādhānyenādhiko raviḥ //

Maitreya, hear this that you ask, how even within the group of seven the sun alone is superior in pre-eminence.

yā tu śaktiḥ parā viṣṇor ṛgyajuḥsāmasaṃjñitā saiṣā trayī tapaty aṃho jagataś ca hinasti yat //

That supreme power of Viṣṇu which is named Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāman—that very triple Veda gives heat, and destroys the sin of the world.

saiṣa viṣṇuḥ sthitaḥ sthityāṃ jagataḥ pālanodyataḥ ṛgyajuḥsāmabhūto 'ntaḥ savitur dvija tiṣṭhati //

This same Viṣṇu, established in the (state of) maintenance, intent on protecting the world, being (composed of) Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāman, abides within the sun, O twice-born.

māsi māsi ravir yo yas tatra tatra hi sā parā trayīmayī viṣṇuśaktir avasthānaṃ karoti vai //

Whichever sun (presides) in each month, there indeed that supreme power of Viṣṇu, consisting of the triple Veda, takes up its station.

ViP 2 11.10

ṛcas tapanti pūrvāhṇe madhyāhne ca yajūṃṣy atha bṛhadrathantarādīni sāmāny ahnaḥ kṣaye ravau //

The Ṛc verses give heat in the forenoon, and at midday the Yajus formulas, and at the close of day the Sāmans beginning with Bṛhad and Rathantara, in the sun.

na kevalaṃ raveḥ śaktir vaiṣṇavī sā trayīmayī brahmātha puruṣo rudras trayam etat trayīmayam //

Not only is that Vaiṣṇava power consisting of the triple Veda the power of the sun: Brahmā, then Puruṣa (Viṣṇu), and Rudra—this triad too consists of the triple Veda.

ViP 2 11.13

sargādau ṛṅmayo brahmā sthitau viṣṇur yajurmayaḥ rudraḥ sāmamayo 'ntāya tasmāt tasyāśucir dhvaniḥ //

At the beginning of creation Brahmā is made of the Ṛc; in maintenance Viṣṇu is made of the Yajus; Rudra, made of the Sāman, is for the end—therefore its (the Sāman's) sound is impure.

ViP 2 11.14
