Sūta said: Beyond this I shall next declare the ordinance of the Dvāpara. There, when the Tretā age is spent, the Dvāpara sets in.

VaP 1 58.2

dvāparādau prajānāntu siddhistratāyuge tu yā| parivṛtte yuge tasmiṃstataḥ sā saṃpraṇaśyati

At the beginning of the Dvāpara, the accomplishment which belonged to creatures in the Tretā age — when that age has turned over, it thereupon perishes entirely.

VaP 1 58.3

tataḥ pravarttate tāsāṃ prajānāṃ dvāpare punaḥ| lobho'dhṛtirvaṇigyuddhaṃ tattvānāmaviniścayaḥ

Then in the Dvāpara there arise again among those creatures greed, unsteadiness, trade, war, and uncertainty about truths.

tambhedaścaiva varṇānāṃ kāryāṇāñcā vinirṇayaḥ| yajñauṣadheḥ paśordaṇḍo mado dambho'kṣamā balam| eṣāṃ rajastamoyuktā pravṛttirdvāpare smṛtā

And then division among the classes, and indecision about what is to be done; punishment (?) of the sacrificial herb and the sacrificial animal; intoxication, hypocrisy, impatience, force — the activity of these, joined with rajas and tamas, is declared (to belong) to the Dvāpara.

VaP 1 58.5

ādye kṛte ca dharmo'sti tretāyāṃ samprapadyate| dvāpare vyākulībhūtvā praṇaśyati kalau yuge

In the first (age), the Kṛta, dharma stands (complete); in the Tretā it (still) holds; in the Dvāpara it becomes confused, and in the Kali age it perishes.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

VaP 1 58.6

varṇānāṃ viparidhvaṃsaḥ saṃkīrttyate tathāśramaḥ| dvaidhamutpadyate caiva yuge tasmin śrutau smṛtau

The ruin of the classes is proclaimed, and likewise (that) of the stages of life; and in that age a twofoldness arises in śruti and in smṛti.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

VaP 1 58.7

dvaidhāt śruteḥ smṛteścaiva niścayo nādhigamyate| aniścayādigamanāddharmatattvaṃ nigadyate| dharmatattve tu bhinnānāṃ matibhedo bhavennṛṇām

Because of the twofoldness of śruti and of smṛti, no certainty is arrived at; and from the failure to reach certainty the truth of dharma is (variously) declared; and among men who differ as to the truth of dharma there comes to be a division of opinion.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

VaP 1 58.8

parasparavibhinnaistairdṛṣṭīnāṃ vibhrameṇa ca| ayaṃ dharmo hyayaṃ neti niścayo nābhigamyate

Through those (opinions) that differ from one another, and through the confusion of views, no certainty is reached as to 'this is dharma' and 'this is not'.

VaP 1 58.9

kāraṇānāñca vakailyāt kāraṇasyāpyaniścayāt| matibhede ca teṣāṃ vai dṛṣṭīnāṃ vibhramo bhavet

And from the deficiency of the causes, and from the uncertainty even of the cause, when there is a difference of opinion among them, a confusion of views arises.

VaP 1 58.10

tato dṛṣṭivibhinnaistaiḥ kṛtaṃ śāstrakulantvidam| eko vedaśvatuṣpādastretāsviha vidhīyate

And because of the curtailment of life-span (it) is seen (thus) in the Dvāpara ages; by the Veda-arrangers it is divided fourfold at the beginnings of the Dvāparas.

And those Siddhas who remain here and, well seen, roam about, and likewise the Seven Sages ever — they too are established there.

brahmakṣatraviśaḥ śūdrā bījārthaṃ ye smṛtā iha| kalijaiḥ saha te sarve nirviśeṣāstadābhavan

The brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras who are here recorded as (remaining) for the sake of seed — all of them then became indistinguishable, together with those born in the Kali age.

teṣāṃ saptarṣayo dharma kathayantītareṣu ca | varṇā śramācārayuktaḥ śrautaḥ smārto dvidhā tu saḥ

To them the seven seers declare the Law, and to the others also: (the Law) joined with the observances of the classes and the stages of life; and it is twofold, based on śruti and on smṛti.

tatasteṣu kriyāvatsu varttante vai prajāḥ kṛte | śrautaḥ smārttaḥ kṛtānāntu dharmaḥ saptarṣidarśitaḥ

Then, when they are engaged in (the proper) rites, the creatures live on in the Kṛta age; the Law of those of the Kṛta age, śrauta and smārta, is that shown by the seven seers.

tāsu dharmavyavastārthaṃ tiṣṭhantīhāyugakṣayāt | manvantarādhikāreṣu tiṣṭhanti munayastu vai

Among these (creatures) they remain here, for the sake of the establishment of the Law, until the destruction of the age; the sages remain (through) the tenures of the manvantaras.

yathā dāvapradagdheṣu tṛṇeṣviha tape ṛtau | navānāṃ prathamaṃ dṛṣṭasteṣāṃ mūle tu sambhavaḥ

Just as, when the grasses have been burnt up by a forest fire here in the hot season, the first sprouting of new ones is seen to arise from the root,

evaṃ yugādyugasteha santānastu parasparam | varttate hyavyavacchedādyāvanmanvantarakṣayaḥ

so here the succession, age after age, continues mutually without interruption, as long as until the destruction of the manvantara.

sukhamāyurbalaṃ rūpaṃ dharmārthau kāma eva ca | yugeṣvetāni hīyante trīṇi pādakrameṇa tu

Happiness, lifespan, strength, beauty, Law and wealth, and desire too — these diminish in the ages, the three (later ages) by the successive (loss of a) quarter.

sasandhyaṃśeṣu hīyante yugānāṃ dharmasiddhayaḥ| ityeṣa pratisandhirvaḥ kīrttitastu mayā dvijāḥ

In the ages together with their twilight portions the attainments of the Law diminish. Thus this transition has been proclaimed to you by me, O twice-born ones.

caturyugānāṃ sarveṣāmetenaiva prasādhanam || eṣā caturyugāvṛttirāsahasrāt pravarttate

By this very (account) the establishing of all the sets of four ages (is accomplished). This revolution of the four ages proceeds up to a thousand (times).

brahmaṇastadahaḥ proktaṃ rātriśca tāvatī smṛtā | atrārjavaṃ jaḍībhāvo bhūtānāmāyugakṣayāt

That is declared to be a day of Brahmā, and the night is held to be of the same length. Herein there is straightforwardness and (then) a state of torpor of beings, up to the destruction of the age.

etadeva tu sarveṣāṃ yugānāṃ lakṣaṇaṃ smṛtam| eṣā caturyugānāntu gaṇanā hyekasaptatiḥ| krameṇa parivṛttā tu manorantaramucyate

This same is held to be the mark of all the ages. This counting of the sets of four ages is indeed seventy-one; when it has revolved in order, it is called an interval of a Manu.

caturyuge tathaikasmin bhavatīha yathāśrutam| tathā cānyeṣu bhavati punastadvai yathākramam

As it happens here in one set of four ages, according to what has been heard, so it happens in the others too, again and again in due order.

sarge sarge yathā bhedā utpadyante tathaiva tu | pañcaviṃśatparimitā na nyūnā nādhikāstathā

In creation after creation, as the divisions arise, just so they are numbered twenty-five, neither fewer nor more.

tathā kalpayugaiḥ sārddhaṃ bhavanti samalakṣaṇāḥ| manvantarāṇāṃ sarveṣāmetadeva tu lakṣaṇam

Thus, along with the ages of the kalpa, they come to have the same characteristics; and this same is the mark of all the manvantaras.

tathā yugānāṃ parivarttanāni cirapravṛttāni yugasvabhavāt | tathā na santiṣṭhati jīvalokaḥ kṣayodayābhyāṃ parivarttamānaḥ

So too the revolutions of the ages have long been in motion by the very nature of the ages; and so the world of living beings does not stand still, revolving through decline and rise.

ityetallakṣaṇaṃ proktaṃ yugānāṃ vai samāsataḥ| atītānāgatānāṃ vai sarvāṇyevāntarāṇi

Thus this mark of the ages has been declared in brief; (thus) indeed are all the intervals of the past and of the future.

And likewise, regarding those to come, the inference is to be made by one who knows — in all the manvantaras here, past and future.

ṛṣayo manavaścaiva sarve tulyāḥ prayojanaiḥ| evaṃ varṇāśramāṇāntu pravibhāgo yuge yuge

the seers and the Manus — all are equal in their functions. Thus is the division of classes and stages of life in age after age.

yugasvabhāvācca tathā vidhatte vai sadā prabhuḥ | varṇāśramavibhāgaśca yugāni yugasiddhaye

And the Lord always ordains (things) in accordance with the nature of the yuga; and (he ordains) the division of the classes and the stages of life, and the yugas, for the accomplishing of the yuga.
