Vayu Purana — Purvardha — Chapter 15

VaP 1 15.1

|| vāyuruvāca || caturddaśavidhaṃ hyetadbuddhvā saṃsāramaṇḍalam| tathā samārabhet karmma saṃsārabhayapīḍitaḥ

Vāyu said: Having understood this circle of rebirth to be of fourteen kinds, one oppressed by the fear of rebirth should undertake action accordingly.

VaP 1 15.2

tataḥ smarati saṃsāracakreṇa parivarttitaḥ| tasmāttu satataṃ yukto dhyānatatparayuñjakaḥ| tathā samārabhedyogaṃ yathātmānaṃ sa paśyati

Then, whirled about by the wheel of rebirth, he remembers; therefore, ever disciplined, engaging himself in devotion to meditation, he should so undertake yoga that he sees the Self.

eṣa ādyaḥ paraṃ jyotireṣa seturanuttamaḥ| vivṛddho hyeṣa bhūtānāṃ na sambhedaśca śāśvataḥ

This is the first, the supreme light; this is the unsurpassed bridge. For he has grown great (in the midst) of beings, and (he is) without division, everlasting.

tadenaṃ setumātmānaṃ agniṃ vai viśvatomukham| hṛdisthaṃ sarvabhūtānāmupāsīta vidhānavit

Therefore one who knows the prescription should worship this bridge, the Self, the fire facing in all directions, seated in the heart of all beings.

VaP 1 15.5

hutvāṣṭāvāhutīḥ samyak śucistadgatamānasaḥ| vaiśvānaraṃ hṛdisthantu yathāvadanupūrvaśaḥ| apaḥ pūrva sakṛt prāśya tuṣṇīṃ bhūtvā upāsate

Having properly offered the eight oblations, pure, with his mind fixed on that — (to) Vaiśvānara who is seated in the heart, duly and in order — first sipping water once, they worship, having become silent.

prāṇāyeti tatastasya prathamā hyāhutiḥ smṛtā| apānāya dvitīyā tu samānāyeti cāparā

Then 'to prāṇa' — that is held to be his first oblation; the second is 'to apāna', and the next 'to samāna'.

VaP 1 15.7

udānāya caturthīti vyānāyeti ca pañcamī| svāhā kāraiḥ paraṃ hutvā śeṣaṃ bhuñjīta kāmataḥ| apaḥ punaḥ sakṛt prāśya tryācamya hṛdayaṃ spṛśet

The fourth is 'to udāna', and the fifth 'to vyāna'. Having offered what remains beyond (these) with utterances of svāhā, he may eat the remnant as he wishes; sipping water once again and rinsing the mouth three times, he should touch his heart.

VaP 1 15.8

oṃprāṇānāṃ granthirasyātmā rudro hyātmā viśāntakaḥ| sa rudro hyātmanaḥ prāṇā evamāpyāyayet svayam

Om. The knot of the breaths is his self; for the self is Rudra, the ender (of all). He is Rudra; the breaths are of the self — thus should he himself nourish (them).

tvaṃ devānāmapi jyeṣṭha ugrastvaṃ caturo vṛṣā | mṛtyughno'si tvamasmabhyaṃ bhadrametaddhutaṃ haviḥ

You are eldest even of the gods; you are fierce, you are the clever bull; you are the slayer of death for us — may this oblation offered be auspicious.

evaṃ hṛdayamālabhya pādāṅguṣṭhe tu dakṣiṇe| viśrāvya dakṣiṇaṃ pāṇiṃ nābhiṃ vai pāṇinā spṛśet | tataḥ punarupaspṛśya cātmānamabhisaṃspṛśet

Having thus touched the heart, (and) on the right big toe, having poured out (water), he should touch the navel with the right hand; then, touching again, he should touch himself all over.

akṣiṇī nāsikā śrotre hṛdayaṃ śira eva ca| dvāvātmānāvubhāvetau prāṇāpānāvudāhṛtau

The two eyes, the nose, the two ears, the heart, and the head — these two selves, both of them, are declared to be prāṇa and apāna.

VaP 1 15.12

tayoḥ prāṇo'ntarātmāsya bāhyo'pāno'ta ucyate| annaṃ prāṇastathāpānaṃ mṛtyurjjīvitameva ca

Of these two, prāṇa is his inner self; apāna, therefore, is called the outer. Food is prāṇa and likewise apāna, (and is) death and life itself.

VaP 1 15.13

annaṃ brahma ca vijñeyaṃ prajānāṃ prasavastathā| annādbhūtāni jāyante sthitirannena ceṣyate| varddhante tena bhūtāni tasmādannantaducyate

And food is to be known as brahman, and as the begetting of creatures. From food beings are born, and by food their continuance is secured; by it beings grow — therefore that is called food (anna).
