Agastya said: I shall declare to you the vow of peace, O king; hear it — by whose practice there is always peace for householders. On the fifth of the bright fortnight in the month of Kārttika, O you of good vows, he should begin it for one full year, and should eat food free of anything sour. Worshipping the god at night — Hari seated upon Śeṣa — (he should worship) the feet with "to Ananta," the waist with "to Vāsuki," the belly with "to Takṣaka," the chest with "to Karkoṭaka," worshipping the throat with "to Padma," the pair of arms with "to Mahāpadma," the face with "to Śaṅkhapāla," and the head with "to Kuṭila." Having thus worshipped (them) as present in Viṣṇu, he should worship them separately as well. He should perform the bathing with milk designating them, and again (that) of Hari; before him the discerning man should offer milk with sesame in the fire. Thus at the end of the year he should feed brahmins; he should have a serpent made of gold and present it to a brahmin. The king who thus performs this vow with devotion has peace always, and likewise no fear from serpents.
