Agastya said: Now, O king, I shall tell (the vow) that removes obstacles; hear it from me — by which no obstacle arises even in what has been properly done. This vow is to be undertaken on the fourth day in the month of Phālguna, O best of kings, with a single night meal; sesame-food is prescribed as the breaking of the fast. That same is to be offered in the fire, and it should be (given) to a brahmin. Having performed this four-month vow five times, he should have a golden elephant-faced (image) made and given to a brahmin, together with five vessels of milk-rice and with sesame. Having thus performed this vow, one is freed from all obstacles. Formerly, when an obstacle arose in Sagara's horse sacrifice (this was done); and likewise by the god Rudra of old when he destroyed Tripura this very thing was done, and therefore Tripura was felled by him. By me too, when I drank up the ocean, this very vow was performed. By other kings also this same (vow) was performed formerly, and by those seeking austerity and versed in knowledge, for the sake of freedom from obstacles, O scorcher of foes. "To the hero, to the steadfast one, to the elephant-faced, to the pot-bellied, to the one-tusked" — thus he is to be worshipped on that day, and again one should make a fire offering for the destruction of obstacles. By the mere doing of this one is freed from all obstacles; by Vināyaka's grace a man becomes one who has accomplished his aim.
