Śrī Varāha said: Again I shall proclaim another (observance) that brings satisfaction to the ancestors; it took place long ago at Dhruvatīrtha — hear it, O Vasundharā. (…) full of curiosity, the greatly fortunate ones, and no śrāddha-gift at all; and all those brāhmaṇas dwelling in the city, honoured with devotion. Then the brāhmaṇa said to them: "Women born of (your) family have been brought for your nourishment; do as you wish." Silk cloth, likewise incense, camphor, aloe-wood and sandal, and food chiefly of sesame, of many kinds, together with the (rice-)balls. When the śrāddha and the offering of the piṇḍas had been performed, that creature became as one who has done good deeds, of divine radiance, no longer wretched in spirit — and so did those beings, each one separately, of those mosquito-bodied ones (who became) fair-limbed and handsome. Then the creature, glad in mind, seeing the celestial car that had come, (and) about to go to heaven, said this to the sage who knew the three times and to the king: "Let all hear my words, which give satisfaction to the ancestors."

In that moment neither vow nor muttered prayer was performed, out of bewilderment; (there was) trembling in him who was overcome with pity and was being watched with curiosity; and (there was one) hollow-eyed, with a shrunken belly stuck to his back, terrified, with only skin and bone on his thighs, yawning, exceedingly emaciated. || They go to the highest goal through sons who honour (them) with the svadhā-offering; today the fathers of King Candrasena have been honoured and stand (there). || "Only for so long a time shall we go on in the ocean, and in the bottomless hell, without hope, by our own deeds." || One should give first to the father, and then, acting so, give to the mother; the mother is (called) 'gotra' and 'goddess by name'; let her be satisfied thus, as one utters the svadhā. || Even water given with faith then avails for endlessness — with faith, and by a brahmin, as the rite of the śrāddha ordinance (prescribes). || Pleased with Sītā's words, the Lord granted her a boon. || Houses are impure, and so are the śrāddha oblations; those who keep the vow of silence go again, having obtained (it), for the sake of the purpose. || Thus is this, O greatly wise one, that you ask me — tell what is to be done, by which this may be accomplished. || The knower of the three times said: That queen of yours, the fair-faced one — bring her; and she, in a private place, by day, is always given to drink and meat, || seated together with a man upon the bed, faint with intoxication. || Agastya said: Let her bathe at Dhruvatīrtha by the order stated by Brahmā, and let her make the libation here by the rule stated before; || and there has not been nor will be any other thing that gives release to the fathers. || Then, in the fifth fortnight from the Āṣāḍhī, from the first day onward, whoever recites (this), endowed with faith and in the presence of brahmins, || he shall satisfy all the fathers, as if he had gone to Gayāśira.
