Making a reverence with joined hands to her head, Vasudhā spoke again. Dharaṇī said: You ought to declare to me, your devotee, this supreme secret: by what mantra (is one to perform) the twilight rite that is intent upon your worship? Speak the pure Bhāgavata (twilight rite) determined by your worship. Then, hearing the words of the Earth, the imperishable source of beings, the Blessed One in the form of the Boar, replied to Vasundharā. Śrī Varāha said: Mādhavī, what you ask of me in truth, that excellent, supreme secret I shall tell you, O gracious one, as it is known to kings. The holy, auspicious Bhāgavatas, having performed my rites, which are pure and release from saṃsāra, should perform the supreme twilight rite exactly as prescribed — this is settled. Then, having taken a handful of water, standing with devotion to me, holding meditation for a moment, he should utter this mantra. Mantra: "(O you) whose form is the primal manifest one, arisen from becoming — all the gods, Brahmā and Rudra, were equal to your likeness, standing in the yoga of meditation. Abiding in the twilight rite, we bow to Vāsudeva, the god whose form is the primal manifest one, self(-abiding) for seven days; yet for the sake of saṃsāra the rite, its performance alone — abiding in the twilight rite: Vāsudeva, homage be to you." It is the supreme mantra of mantras, the supreme austerity of those who practise austerity; he who thus performs the observance goes to my world. It is the supreme secret of secrets, the highest and most excellent mystery; he who recites thus daily is not stained by sin. It is not to be given to one uninitiated, nor in any way to one not invested (with the thread); it is to be given only to one initiated and qualified. Again I shall declare something else, O goddess; hear it from me in truth. He does not accept even a lamp given (otherwise than) by the auspicious Bhāgavatas. Having performed my rites and having taken an excellent lamp, then placing himself upon his knees, he should utter this mantra. Mantra: "Om, homage to the Blessed One, to the splendour that is grace, O Viṣṇu. All the gods, abiding in fire, have entered (it); thus the fire will come to be by your splendour. By your own splendour, quickly (protect) me, by the splendour of the mantra; for the sake of saṃsāra, O god, the lamp is to be taken — the mantra, the embodied mantra ... having become, this rite fruitless." He who does this as is proper, the man who gives a lamp — by that his fathers are carried across and his grandfathers made free of taint. — One should apply the mark with fragrant paste upon my forehead, O lovely one. And I shall declare to you another rite that brings happiness to the world.

Desiring death by the discus, he too remained fixed in the work (of worshipping) me; day after day, performing what was excellent and auspicious, he practised austerity, thinking, "When shall I be established in Viṣṇu?" And as he continued thus, the twelfth of Vaiśākha (came).

Right then that foremost of Bhāgavatas was split apart by the discus, and he attained me. His flesh (became) copper, his blood gold, his bones silver, and many (other) metals; and tin and lead, contained in the tin-metal (class), and bell-metal and brass — and (their) dross is (the residue) of these.

This is always to be done by the Bhāgavatas who do what is dear to me. Thus copper came into being; and so that (metal) pleases me.

And by consecrated Bhāgavatas it is given in the foot-water, the guest-water and so on. Thus the rule of consecration has been declared, and thus the origin of copper.

"And accept this incense of mine, which releases (one) from all worldly existence." Again I shall declare another (matter): how one should present the lamp. Those (things) I shall tell you, which were asked of me by you before: gold, silver, bronze—(vessels) in which one should give the drink-offering. And seeing me four-armed, (that man) intent upon my rites, bowing with joined palms, laying his head on the ground, spoke. And seeing him, I said, with an inwardly gladdened self: "For so long as you remain fixed in the copper (vessel), you shall abide with me." From that time on, the copper-natured Guḍākeśa (Arjuna) has been established (there). By a copper vessel, O Earth, when a drink-offering is given, drop by drop its fruit—hear it as I tell it. With this very mantra the initiated one should perform the sandhyā.
