A region becomes waterless: this is my māyā, my dear. That the moon wanes fortnight by fortnight and also waxes; sound, and touch, and form, and taste, and smell as the fifth; that a creature comes forth from food — this is my māyā, my dear. And again, this (growth) furnished with leaves and the rest is my power of māyā. From a single scattered seed those (plants) are born in abundance. Taking on the mare's mouth, I drink up that water. Making the wind out of māyā, I release it among the clouds; this indeed is my power of māyā, by which I abide upon the waters. Both Prajāpati and Rudra I create, and I sustain. Just as a woman's womb is entered by a foremost brahmin, and there is no perverse deed of his, no offence is found in him, so too not even one out of thousands of heavens is pleasing (to him). I wish to know your māyā, with which you play, Mādhava — I who dwell in this Niṣāda's womb and in the hells. Fie on austerity, fie on my deeds, fie on the fruit, fie on life! Deluded by the net of māyā, one does not know what may be approached and what may not. In my fiftieth year that brahmin was made known by me. What is drinkable and what is not drinkable I have drunk, and I have sold things not to be sold; I did not guard against going to those not to be gone to, nor against speech to be spoken and not to be spoken. Then the ascetic woman, while bathing, was seized in the midst of the water by some crocodile — the helpless woman, by (its) lashing tongue. There she says to the Niṣāda: "Go; why do you torment yourself? Protect those children with various kinds of food. Do not weep — I tell you, blessings on you: I was that beloved of yours. Having reached the bank of the Gaṅgā I have thus become a sage." Though urged in this way by him, the Niṣāda does not understand. Taking up a sweet voice he replied to the best of the twice-born: "I came to the bank of the Gaṅgā through the enticement of māyā; having carefully set down my staff, my water-pot and my garment on the bank, I then plunged, by the rite of bathing, into that spotless water." Then, hearing the brahmin's words, the sage became silent, having himself settled himself in the state that follows the brahmin(s). "What perverse deed have I done, Mādhava, while serving (you)? And what wrong have I committed while practising austerity?" "Nothing whatever was done by you, either good or evil; all of it there is made of māyā — out of bewilderment you torment yourself. (He is) bearer of bow, quiver, arrows and sword, whose prowess is the power of māyā, and he indeed sees me always, well established in the power of māyā."
