yathā pāpāni pūyante gaṅgāvārivigāhanāt / tathā purāṇaśravaṇād duritānāṃ vināśanam

Just as sins are cleansed by plunging into the water of the Gaṅgā, so from hearing the Purāṇa there is destruction of evils.

A woman or a man, hearing even a single quarter (of it) in purity, obtains (the fruit) of a gift of gold, of land, of a horse, of a cow, an elephant, or a chariot, and becomes most holy on earth. When a bath has been taken at an excellent, most holy ford — in the water of the Gaṅgā, at Naimiṣa or Puṣkara, or at Kokāmukha, which the brahmins extol, or having reached Prayāga in the month of Māgha —

sa tatphalaṃ prāpya ca vāmanasya saṃkīrtayan nānyamanāḥ padaṃ hi / gacchenmayā nārada te 'dya coktaṃ yad rājasūyasya phalaṃ prayacchet

— having gained that fruit, and proclaiming (the deeds) of Vāmana with undistracted mind, he would go indeed to that abode. What has been told by me to you today, Nārada, would grant the fruit of a Rājasūya sacrifice.

VamP 69.8

yad bhūmiloke suralokalabhye mahatsukhaṃ prāpya naraḥ samagram / prāpanoti cāsya śravaṇānmaharṣe sautrāmaṇernāsti ca saṃśayo me

That great and complete happiness in the world of earth which is (otherwise) obtainable (only) in the world of the gods, a man attains from hearing this, O great sage — and (the fruit) of the Sautrāmaṇī sacrifice; of this I have no doubt.

VamP 69.9

Whatever fruit there may be of the gift of a jewel, and of (gifts made) at the eclipse of the sun and moon by Rāhu, and the fruit declared for the gift of food to a hungry, excellent brahmin who maintains the sacred fires —

VamP 69.10

— and that fruit which the gods proclaim (belongs) to one who, with sons and wife afflicted by famine, is yet ever intent on their support, devoted to the gods, the fire, brahmins and seers, an attendant upon his parents, and to a brother who is like an elder (father) — that fruit he obtains from the recitation of this.

They call the fourteenth the Vāmana, the foremost, on the hearing of which heaps of sins go to destruction; and in this I have no doubt, O Nārada, that even great sins (perish) at once.

pāṭhāt saṃśravaṇād vipra śrāvaṇādapi kasyacit / sarvapāpāni naśyanti vāmanasya sadā mude

By reciting, by hearing along (with others), or even by causing someone to hear it, O brahmin, all sins are destroyed — (this is) always to Vāmana's delight.

VamP 69.13

idaṃ rahasyaṃ paramaṃ tavoktaṃ na vācyametaddharibhaktivarjite / dvijasya nindāratihinadakṣiṇe sahetuvākyāvṛtapāpasattve

This supreme secret has been told to you; it is not to be spoken to one devoid of devotion to Hari, nor to one who takes pleasure in reviling a brahmin, who is stingy with the sacrificial fee, or whose being is enveloped in sin along with (its) causal talk.

vācakāya pradātavya gobhūsvarṇavibhūṣaṇam / vittaśāṭhyaṃ na kartavyaṃ kurvan śravaṇanāśakam

To the reciter should be given cows, land, gold and ornaments; miserliness with wealth should not be practised — one who does so destroys the (fruit of) hearing.

VamP 69.16

trisaṃdhyaṃ ca paṭhan śṛṇvan sarvapāpapraṇāśanam / asūyārahitaṃ vipra sarvasampatpradāyakam
