iti śrīśivamahāpurāṇe saptamyāṃ vāyavīyasaṃhitāyāṃ pūrvabhāge kālaprabhāve tridevāyurvarṇanaṃ nāmāṣṭamo 'dhyāyaḥ chapter 9 munaya ūcuḥ kathaṃ jagadidaṃ kṛtsnaṃ vidhāya ca nidhāya ca ājñayā paramāṃ krīḍāṃ karoti parameśvaraḥ

Thus the eighth chapter, named "The Description of the Lifespans of the Three Gods," in the section on the power of Time, in the first part of the Vāyavīya Saṃhitā, the seventh (saṃhitā) of the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa. Chapter 9. The sages said: How does the Supreme Lord, having arranged and having withdrawn this entire world, carry on his supreme play by (mere) command?

kiṃ tatprathamasaṃbhūtaṃ kenedamakhilaṃ tatam kenā vā punarevedaṃ grasyate pṛthukukṣiṇā

What is that which came into being first? By what is all this spread out? And by what wide-bellied one is this again swallowed up?

vāyuruvāca śaktiḥ prathamasambhūtā śāṃtyatītapadottarā tato māyā tato 'vyaktaṃ śivācchaktimataḥ prabhoḥ

Vāyu said: Śakti came into being first, above the level called śāntyatīta; then māyā, then the unmanifest — (all) from Śiva, the Lord who possesses Śakti.

511a śāntyatītapadaṃ śaktestataḥ śāntipadakramāt tato vidyāpadaṃ tasmātpratiṣṭhāpadasaṃbhavaḥ

From Śakti (arose) the śāntyatīta level, then in sequence the śānti level, then the vidyā level, and from that the arising of the pratiṣṭhā level.

nivṛttipadamutpannaṃ pratiṣṭhāpadataḥ kramāt evamuktā samāsena sṛṣṭirīśvaracoditā

From the pratiṣṭhā level arose in sequence the nivṛtti level. Thus has creation, impelled by the Lord, been told in brief.

ānulomyāttathaiteṣāṃ pratilomyena saṃhṛtiḥ asmātpañcapadoddiṣṭātparassraṣṭā samiṣyate

Thus (creation proceeds) in the forward order, and by the reverse order comes the withdrawal of these. Higher than this (set) designated as the five levels, a creator is held (to exist).

kalābhiḥ pañcabhirvyāptaṃ tasmādviśvamidaṃ jagat avyaktaṃ kāraṇaṃ yattadātmanā samanuṣṭhitam

Therefore this whole universe is pervaded by the five kalās. That unmanifest which is the cause, being presided over by the Self,

mahadādiviśeṣāṃtaṃ sṛjatītyapi saṃmatam kiṃ tu tatrāpi kartṛtvaṃ nāvyaktasya na cātmanaḥ

creates (all) that begins with mahat and ends with the gross particulars — this too is agreed. Yet even there agency belongs neither to the unmanifest nor to the Self,

acetanatvātprakṛterajñatvātpuruṣasya ca pradhānaparamāṇvādi yāvatkiñcidacetanam

because prakṛti is insentient and the puruṣa is not a knower (in that respect). Pradhāna, the atoms and so forth — whatever is insentient,

tatkartṛkaṃ svayaṃ dṛṣṭaṃ buddhimatkāraṇaṃ vinā jagacca kartṛsāpekṣaṃ kāryaṃ sāvayavaṃ yataḥ

— (all that) is seen of itself to have (something else) as its agent, (and this is impossible) without an intelligent cause; and the world requires an agent, since it is an effect possessing parts.

tasmācchaktassvatantro yaḥ sarvaśaktiśca sarvavit anādinidhanaścāyaṃ mahadaiśvaryasaṃyutaḥ

Therefore he who is capable and independent, all-powerful and all-knowing, without beginning or end, endowed with great sovereignty —

sa eva jagataḥ kartā mahādevo maheśvarāḥ pātā hartā ca sarvasya tataḥ pṛthagananvayaḥ

he alone is the maker of the world, the Great God, the Great Lord, and the preserver and destroyer of all; distinct from that (world), unconnected with it.

pariṇāmaḥ pradhānasya pravṛttiḥ puruṣasya ca sarvaṃ satyavratasyaiva śāsanena pravartate

The transformation of pradhāna and the activity of puruṣa — all this proceeds by the command of him alone whose resolve is true.

itīyaṃ śāśvatī niṣṭhā satāṃ manasi vartate na cainaṃ pakṣamāśritya vartate svalpacetanaḥ

Thus this eternal conviction abides in the minds of the good; but one of little intelligence does not take his stand on this position.

yāvadādisamāraṃbho yāvadyaḥ pralayo mahān tāvadapyeti sakalaṃ brahmaṇaḥ śāradāṃ śatam

As long as the first commencement (lasts), and as long as the great dissolution, so long does all this amount to a hundred years of Brahmā.

paramityāyuṣo nāma brahmaṇo 'vyaktajanmanaḥ tatparākhyaṃ tadardhaṃ ca parārdhamabhidhīyate

'Para' is the name of the lifespan of Brahmā, who is born of the unmanifest; that is called 'para', and half of it is called 'parārdha'.

parārdhadvayakālāṃte pralaye samupasthite avyaktamātmanaḥ kāryamādāyātmani tiṣṭhati

At the end of the period of two parārdhas, when the dissolution has arrived, the unmanifest, withdrawing into itself its own effect, abides in itself.

ātmanyavasthite 'vyakte vikāre pratisaṃhṛte sādharmyeṇādhitiṣṭhete pradhānapuruṣāvubhau

When the unmanifest rests in itself, its modification having been withdrawn, both pradhāna and puruṣa abide (thus), being alike in character.

tamaḥ sattvaguṇāvetau samatvena vyavasthitau anudriktāvanantau tāvotaprotau parasparam

These two qualities, darkness (tamas) and goodness (sattva), stand in equilibrium, neither predominating, endless, the two interwoven with each other.

guṇasāmye tadā tasminnavibhāge tamodaye śāṃtavātaikanīre ca na prājñāyata kiṃcana

Then, in that equality of the guṇas, undivided, with darkness arisen, the wind stilled and the waters one, nothing whatever was discerned.

aprajñāte jagatyasminneka eva maheśvaraḥ upāsya rajanīṃ kṛtsnāṃ parāṃ māheśvarīṃ tataḥ

When this world was thus undiscerned, the Great Lord alone, having thereafter passed the whole of the great night of Maheśvara —

prabhātāyāṃ tu śarvaryāṃ pradhānapuruṣāvubhau praviśya kṣobhayāmāsa māyāyogānmaheśvaraḥ

but when the night had brightened into dawn, Maheśvara, entering both pradhāna and puruṣa, agitated them through the exercise of his māyā.

He whose wondrous will (reaches) ever beyond and beyond the universe, in one portion of whose single power the whole (universe) is contained — him the knowers of the path call the Self, the lord of the path: homage to him, who is unlike all the worlds.
