iti śrīśivamahāpurāṇe saptamyāṃ vā-- pū-- sṛṣṭyādivarṇanaṃ nāmaikādaśo 'dhyāyaḥ chapter 12 vāyuruvāca sargaṃ ciṃtayatastasya tadā vai buddhipūrvakam pradhyānakāle mohastu prādurbhūtastamomayaḥ

Thus, in the glorious Śiva Mahāpurāṇa, in the seventh (section), the Vāyavīya, the former part, the eleventh chapter, called the Description of the Creation and so forth. Chapter 12. Vāyu said: While he was deliberately pondering creation, at the time of his meditation there arose a delusion made of darkness.

SiP 7.1 12.2

tamomoho mahāmohastāmisraścāndhasaṃjñitaḥ avidyā pañcamī caiṣā prādurbhūtā mahātmanaḥ

Tamas, moha, mahāmoha, tāmisra, and that called andha (blind darkness) — this fivefold ignorance appeared from the great one.

SiP 7.1 12.3

pañcadhā 'vasthitaḥ sargo dhyāyatastvabhimāninaḥ sarvatastamasātīva bījakumbhavadāvṛtaḥ

Fivefold was the creation established for him as he meditated, being possessed of self-conceit; it was covered over on all sides by darkness exceedingly, like a seed inside a pot.

SiP 7.1 12.4

bahirantaścāprakāśaḥ stabdho niḥsaṃjña eva ca tasmātteṣāṃ vṛtā buddhirmukhāni karaṇāni ca

(This creation is) without light outside and within, stiff and insensible; therefore their intelligence, their mouths (openings), and their organs are covered over.

SiP 7.1 12.5

tasmātte saṃvṛtātmāno nagā mukhyāḥ prakīrtitāḥ taṃ dṛṣṭvā 'sādhakaṃ brahmā prathamaṃ sargamīdṛśam

Therefore they, whose selves are enclosed, are declared to be the trees, the 'chief' ones. Seeing that first creation of such a kind to be ineffectual, Brahmā—

SiP 7.1 12.6

aprasannamanā bhūtvā dvitīyaṃ so 'bhyamanyata tasyābhidhāyataḥ sargaṃ tiryaksroto 'bhyavartata

—becoming displeased in mind, thought upon a second (creation). As he was designing that creation, the 'sideways-streaming' one came about.

SiP 7.1 12.7

antaḥprakāśāstiryaṃca āvṛtāśca bahiḥ punaḥ paśvātmānastato jātā utpathagrāhiṇaśca te

The sideways(-streaming) ones have light within, but again are covered outside; from that were born beings with the nature of beasts, and they take to wrong paths.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 7.1 12.8

tamapyasādhakaṃ jñātvā sargamanyamamanyata tadordhvasrotaso vṛtto devasargastu sāttvikaḥ

Knowing that too to be ineffectual, he thought of another creation; then the upward-streaming creation, the creation of gods, came about, of the sāttvika kind.

SiP 7.1 12.9

te sukhaprītibahulā bahirantaśca nāvṛtāḥ prakāśā bahirantaścasvabhāvādeva saṃjñitāḥ

They are abundant in pleasure and delight, and are uncovered both outside and within; they are called luminous both without and within by their very nature.

SiP 7.1 12.10

tato 'bhidhyāyatovyaktādarvāksrotastu sādhakaḥ manuṣyanāmā sañjātaḥ sargo duḥkhasamutkaṭaḥ

Then, as he meditated, from the Unmanifest arose the downward-streaming (creation), which was effective — the creation named 'man', abundant in suffering.

SiP 7.1 12.11

prakāśābahirantaste tamodriktā rajo 'dhikāḥ pañcamonugrahaḥ sargaścaturdhā saṃvyavasthitaḥ

They are luminous outside and within; they have an excess of tamas and a preponderance of rajas. The fifth is the creation of grace; (thus) it is arranged fourfold.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

SiP 7.1 12.12

viparyayeṇa śaktyā ca tuṣṭyāsiddhyā tathaiva ca te 'parigrāhiṇaḥ sarve saṃvibhāgaratāḥ punaḥ

(It is fourfold) by inversion, by capacity, by contentment, and likewise by attainment. They are all non-acquisitive, and again devoted to sharing out.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition — the model flagged this verse as uncertain

SiP 7.1 12.13

khādanāścāpyaśīlāśca bhūtādyāḥ parikīrtitāḥ prathamo mahataḥ sargo brahmaṇaḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ

They are also devouring and without good conduct; they are proclaimed the 'elemental' ones (bhūtādi). The first creation of Brahmā, the supreme lord, is that of Mahat.

SiP 7.1 12.14

tanmātrāṇāṃ dvitīyastu bhūtasargaḥ sa ucyate vaikārikastṛtīyastu sarga aindriyakaḥ smṛtaḥ

The second is that of the subtle elements (tanmātras); it is called the creation of the elements. The third is the modificatory one, known as the creation of the sense-organs.

SiP 7.1 12.15

ityeṣa prakṛteḥ sargaḥ sambhṛto 'buddhipūrvakaḥ mukhyasargaścaturthastu mukhyā vai sthāvarāḥ smṛtāḥ

Thus this creation of Prakṛti has been brought about without deliberation. The fourth is the 'chief' creation, and the immobile ones are indeed known as the 'chief' ones.

SiP 7.1 12.16

tiryaksrotastu yaḥ proktastiryagyoniḥ sa pañcamaḥ tadūrdhvasrotasaḥ ṣaṣṭho devasargastu sa smṛtaḥ

And that which was called the sideways-streaming, the animal womb, is the fifth; the sixth is that of the upward-streaming, and it is known as the creation of the gods.

tato 'rvāk srotasāṃ sargaḥ saptamaḥ sa tu mānuṣaḥ aṣṭamo 'nugrahaḥ sargaḥ kaumāro navamaḥ smṛtaḥ

Then the creation of the downward-streaming ones is the seventh, and that is the human one; the eighth creation is that of grace, and the ninth is known as the Kumāra creation.
