Shiva Purana — Kailasa Samhita — Chapter 3

SiP 6 3.1

।। ईश्वर उवाच ।। शृणु देवि प्रवक्ष्यामि यन्मां त्वम्परि पृच्छसि ।। तस्य श्रवणमात्रेण जीवस्साक्षाच्छिवो भवेत्

|| īśvara uvāca || śṛṇu devi pravakṣyāmi yanmāṃ tvampari pṛcchasi || tasya śravaṇamātreṇa jīvassākṣācchivo bhavet

Īśvara said: Listen, Goddess, I shall declare what you ask of me. By the mere hearing of it a living being becomes Śiva himself.

SiP 6 3.2

प्रणवार्थपरिज्ञानमेव ज्ञानं मदात्मकम् ।। बीजन्तत्सर्वविद्यानां मंत्र म्प्रणवनामकम्

praṇavārthaparijñānameva jñānaṃ madātmakam || bījantatsarvavidyānāṃ maṃtra mpraṇavanāmakam

The full understanding of the meaning of the praṇava is itself the knowledge that consists of me. That mantra named praṇava is the seed of all sciences.

SiP 6 3.3

अतिसूक्ष्मं महार्थं च ज्ञेयं तद्वटबीजवत् ।। वेदादि वेदसारं च मद्रूपं च विशेषतः

atisūkṣmaṃ mahārthaṃ ca jñeyaṃ tadvaṭabījavat || vedādi vedasāraṃ ca madrūpaṃ ca viśeṣataḥ

It is to be known as exceedingly subtle yet of great import, like the seed of the banyan; (it is) the beginning of the Veda and the essence of the Veda, and especially my own form.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.4

देवो गुणत्रयातीतः सर्वज्ञः सर्वकृत्प्रभुः ।। ओमित्येकाक्षरे मंत्रे स्थितोहं सर्वगश्शिवः

devo guṇatrayātītaḥ sarvajñaḥ sarvakṛtprabhuḥ || omityekākṣare maṃtre sthitohaṃ sarvagaśśivaḥ

The god beyond the three qualities, all-knowing, the lord who makes all — as the single-syllabled mantra 'om' I abide, the all-pervading Śiva.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.5

यदस्ति वस्तु तत्सर्वं गुणप्राधान्ययोगतः ।। समस्तं व्यस्त मपि च प्रणवार्थं प्रचक्षते

yadasti vastu tatsarvaṃ guṇaprādhānyayogataḥ || samastaṃ vyasta mapi ca praṇavārthaṃ pracakṣate

Whatever thing exists, all of that, through the predominance of one or another of the qualities, whether taken together or taken separately, they declare to be the meaning of the praṇava.

SiP 6 3.6

sarvārthasādhakaṃ tasmādekaṃ brahmaitadakṣaram || tenomiti jagatkṛsnaṃ kurute prathamaṃ śivaḥ enameva hi deveśi sarvamaṃtraśiromaṇim || kāśyāmahaṃ pradāsyāmi jīvānāṃ muktihetave tasmādvedādirevāhaṃ praṇavo mama vācakaḥ|| vācakatvānmamaiṣo'pi vedādiriti kathyate mantro yantraṃ devatā ca prapaṃco gurureva ca || śiṣyaśca ṣaṭpadārthā nāmeṣāmarthaṃ śṛṇu priye sarvaśāstrārtha tattvajñaṃ vedāntajñānapāragam || ācāryyamupasaṃgamya yatiṃ matimatāṃ varam athāgnimātmanyāropya brāhmaṇaḥ pravrajedgṛhāt || śrapayitvā caruṃ tasminsamidannājyabhedataḥ tato guruḥ samādāya virajānalajaṃ śitam || bhasma tenaiva taṃ śiṣyaṃ samuddhṛtya yathāvidhi evaṃvidhopāsakasya mallokagatimeva ca || matto vijñānamāsādya matsāyujyaphalaṃ priye

Therefore this one imperishable brahman (/syllable) accomplishes every aim; by it, as 'om', Śiva first makes the whole world. This very (syllable), O queen of the gods, the crest-jewel of all mantras, I shall bestow in Kāśī for the liberation of living beings. Therefore I myself am the beginning of the Veda; the praṇava is what denotes me, and because it denotes me it too is called 'the beginning of the Veda'. Mantra, yantra, deity, the manifold world, the guru, and the disciple — these are the six categories; hear their meaning, dear one. Having approached the teacher who knows the truth of the meaning of all the scriptures, who has gone to the far shore of Vedānta knowledge, an ascetic, the best of the wise — then, having placed the fire within himself, let the brahmin go forth from the household, after cooking the caru in it with the several (offerings of) kindling, food and ghee. Then the guru, taking up the cooled ash born of the viraja fire, with that very (ash) raising up that disciple according to rule — for a worshipper of such a kind (there is) attainment of my world, and, having obtained knowledge from me, the fruit of union with me, dear one.

SiP 6 3.7

शिवो वा प्रणवो ह्येष प्रणवो वा शिवः स्मृतः ।। वाच्यवाचकयोर्भेदो नात्यंतं विद्यते यतः

śivo vā praṇavo hyeṣa praṇavo vā śivaḥ smṛtaḥ || vācyavācakayorbhedo nātyaṃtaṃ vidyate yataḥ

Either this praṇava is Śiva, or Śiva is held to be the praṇava, since between the signified and the signifier no absolute difference exists.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.8

तस्मादेकाक्षरं देवं मां च ब्रह्मर्षयो विदुः ।। वाच्यवाचकयोरैक्यं मन्यमाना विपश्चितः

tasmādekākṣaraṃ devaṃ māṃ ca brahmarṣayo viduḥ || vācyavācakayoraikyaṃ manyamānā vipaścitaḥ

Therefore the brahmin-seers know the single-syllabled one and me as the (one) god, the wise ones holding the identity of the signified and the signifier.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.9

अतस्तदेव जानीयात्प्रणवं सर्वकारणम् ।। निर्विकारी मुमुक्षुर्मां निर्गुणं परमेश्वरम्

atastadeva jānīyātpraṇavaṃ sarvakāraṇam || nirvikārī mumukṣurmāṃ nirguṇaṃ parameśvaram

Hence one seeking liberation, free of change, should know that very praṇava, the cause of all, as me, the qualityless supreme Lord.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.11

तत्रादौ सम्प्रवक्ष्यामि प्रणवोद्धारमम्बिके ।। यस्य विज्ञानमात्रेण सिद्धिश्च परमा भवेत्

tatrādau sampravakṣyāmi praṇavoddhāramambike || yasya vijñānamātreṇa siddhiśca paramā bhavet

There, first, I shall fully declare the extraction of the praṇava, O Ambikā, by the mere understanding of which the highest attainment comes about.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.12

निवृत्तिमुद्धरेत्पूर्वमिन्धनं च ततः परम् ।। कालं समुद्धरेत्पश्चाद्दंडमीश्वरमेव च

nivṛttimuddharetpūrvamindhanaṃ ca tataḥ param || kālaṃ samuddharetpaścāddaṃḍamīśvarameva ca

First he should extract nivṛtti, and after that indhana; then he should extract kāla, and daṇḍa and īśvara.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.13

वर्णपंचकरूपोयमेवं प्रणव उद्धृतः ।। त्रिमात्रबिन्दुनादात्मा मुक्तिदो जपतां सदा

varṇapaṃcakarūpoyamevaṃ praṇava uddhṛtaḥ || trimātrabindunādātmā muktido japatāṃ sadā

Thus this praṇava is extracted as having the form of five phonemes; consisting of three measures together with bindu and nāda, it ever gives liberation to those who recite it.

SiP 6 3.14

ब्रह्मादिस्थावरान्तानां सर्वेषां प्राणिनां खलु ।। प्राणः प्रणव एवायं तस्मात्प्रणव ईरितः

brahmādisthāvarāntānāṃ sarveṣāṃ prāṇināṃ khalu || prāṇaḥ praṇava evāyaṃ tasmātpraṇava īritaḥ

Indeed, of all breathing creatures, from Brahmā down to immobile things, this praṇava is the very breath (prāṇa); therefore it is called praṇava.

आद्यम्वर्णमकारं च उकारमुत्तरे ततः ।। मकारं मध्यतश्चैव नादांतं तस्य चोमिति

ādyamvarṇamakāraṃ ca ukāramuttare tataḥ || makāraṃ madhyataścaiva nādāṃtaṃ tasya comiti

arddhamātrā maheśāni bindunādasvarūpiṇī || varṇanīyā na vai cāddhā jñeyā jñānibhireva sā

The half-mora, O Great Mistress, has the nature of bindu and nāda; it cannot truly be described directly — it is to be known by the knowers alone.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.19

ईशानस्सर्वविद्यानामित्यद्याश्श्रुतयः प्रिये ।। मत्त एव भवन्तीति वेदास्सत्यम्वदन्ति हि

īśānassarvavidyānāmityadyāśśrutayaḥ priye || matta eva bhavantīti vedāssatyamvadanti hi

"He is the lord of all sciences" — such are the foremost scriptural utterances, O beloved; "they arise from me alone" — thus the Vedas indeed speak the truth.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 6 3.21

अकारस्तु महद्बीजं रजस्स्रष्टा चतुर्मुखः।। उकारः प्रकृतिर्योनिस्सत्त्वं पालयिता हरिः

Among the letters beginning with a, each successive one is the pervader, while the letter below is the pervaded; thus one should conceive it everywhere. In the nāda five kalās, arisen from Īśāna, are declared; by joining together the unity of the six kinds, its being the manifold universe is spoken of.
