When all the Vedas were lost, the rites too were lost; the brahmins became evil in conduct, and so then did the gods. The gods said: "Protect, protect, O great Māyā, all these creatures who are your own; withdraw your anger now, or else the worlds will perish." She distributed the fruits in her hands to the flowers, and pleasant grasses to the cows, and to others as was fitting. Then there arose innumerable Mothers of divine form, all wearing the crescent moon, all of splendour equal to lightning. "Seeing immortals such as me, who would show such compassion — except the sovereign of the gods, apart from Mother Śatākṣī? Whenever an affliction arising from demons shall come upon the earth, then and then again I shall descend and bring welfare, without doubt."
