Homage to (you) endowed with Kālikā's form, homage to (you) who are the very shape of salutation; homage be to you, Śrīvidyā, whose form is Chinnamastā; homage to you who are to be known through the Vedānta, homage to you, the supreme Self; homage and homage to the mistress of endless crores of world-eggs. On the lovely peak of Himavat she was established, borne by a lion, attended on all sides by divine maidens with hands joined. There is not in the three worlds an asura woman, a nāga woman, a gandharva woman or a dānava woman such as she, so delightful. The Goddess said: You speak the truth, O messenger, nothing false is said; but one vow was made by me before — learn that from me. Thus addressed, the dānava Dhūmralocana ran after her; by the mere utterance of "hūṃ" the Great Mistress burned him up. I am his subtle Nature; how should I choose another husband? A lioness, though tormented by desire, never chooses a jackal.
