The righteous one then said to a Niṣāda who was taking his meal: "Carry me quickly to the far bank of the Yamunā by your water-craft." The sage, wishing to take hold of the fisherman's charming daughter, touched her with his right hand upon her right hand. (She said:) "Union between us two does not fit, like that of glass and gold; union between two of equal caste and form would give happiness." (He said:) "Since you make my command come true, be Satyavatī by name, and be worthy of reverence by all yogīs and even by the thirty gods." As soon as he was born, the brilliant one said to his mother in reply: "Go, mother, as you wish; I go from here onward." Thus wandering over many tīrthas situated in various lands, the son of Kālikā reached the city of Vārāṇasī. (Should one worship) Śrīda Omkāranātha, or Kṛttivāseśvara, or Kedāreśa, or Kāmeśa, or Candreśa, or Trilocana, or Bāṣkulīśa Mahādeva, or else Siddhīśvara, or Viśvedeveśvara, or Vīrabhadreśa, or Bhairaveśvara? That Śaṅkara who, as the chief one, stands in the middle of Kāśī for the happiness of the people of his own city — therefore he is Madhyameśvara. With such observances the righteous yogī worshipped Madhyameśvara at the three times of day with fruits grown on various trees. "The Vedas did not come to know your greatness, O lord of Umā. You alone are the maker of the world, its upholder, and likewise its remover. The inner self of all, the Lord Śarva, the giver of all, are you. Why does the Lord appoint me to begging, which produces wretchedness?" The Brāhma, the Pādma, the Vaiṣṇava, the Śaiva, and the Bhāgavata, the Bhaviṣya and the Nāradīya, and thereafter the Mārkaṇḍeya. The purāṇa spoken by Nārada they declare to be the Nāradīya; that in which the great sage Mārkaṇḍeya was the speaker to Taṇḍa (is the Mārkaṇḍeya). Whoever hears or also recites this supreme secret is freed from all sins and is honoured in the world of the ṛṣis.
