—and (the offering of) the northern course too, in the fire, or, in the absence of fire, again in water: whoever gratifies the fathers with devotion, the fathers gratify him. Hear again, Bhīṣma: formerly the twice-born sons of Bhāradvāja, having attained to the discipline of yoga, fell away through misconduct. And having consumed the cow, they all reported to their teacher: "The milch-cow was killed by a tiger; let the calves be taken in." Just so they are seen even today on Mount Kālañjara, O king; by that deed they were born as those who make no distinction between good and evil. The king, lord of the Nīpas, endowed with majesty, glorious, surrounded by his harem, entered that forest there. "Through the favour of the fathers, let merit be obtained by you"—having sprinkled the cow, they were, in accordance with dharma, made ready (as an offering) for the fathers.

devakāryādapi mune pitṛkāryyaṃ viśiṣyate || pitṛbhakto'si viprarṣe tena tvamajarāmaraḥ
