From the Vairāja Puruṣa the heroic Śatarūpā was born; Priyavrata and Uttānapāda were born of Vīrakā. Brahmā, the Prajāpati, the Lord, being pleased, gave him a station equal to his own, and an unshakeable one, in front of the Seven Sages — (this) of the descent of Viṣṇu, for the protection of creatures, for the safeguarding of dharma, for the chastisement of the wicked. While they were practising austerity on the earth, trees came into being; and as the earth went unprotected, there came about a destruction of creatures. Having created by his mind the unmoving and the moving, the two-footed and the four-footed, Dakṣa began the creation by copulation. From then on, O chief of brahmins, creatures come into being through copulation; the creation of the earlier ones is said to be from will, from sight, from touch.
