tapasā divi modante pratyakṣaṃ devatāgaṇāḥ|| ṛṣayo munayaścaiva satyaṃ jānīha madvacaḥ sāttvikaṃ daivatānāṃ hi yatīnāmūrddhvaretasām || rājasaṃ dānavānāṃ hi manuṣyāṇāṃ tathaiva ca || tāmasaṃ rākṣasānāṃ hi narāṇāṃ krūrakarmaṇām recakaḥ pūrakaḥ kumbhaḥ prāṇāyāmastridhā smṛtaḥ || nāḍīsaṃcāravijñānaṃ pratyāhāranirodhanam mānuṣyaṃ ca samāsādya svargamokṣaprasādhanam || nācaratyātmanaḥ śreyassa mṛtaśśocate ciram adhruveṇa śarīreṇa dhruvaṃ yo na prasādhayet || dhruvaṃ tasya paribhraṣṭamadhruvaṃ naṣṭameva ca uktaṃ śiveti yairnāma tathā harahareti ca|| na teṣāṃ narakādbhītiryamāddhi munisattama
By austerity the hosts of the gods rejoice visibly in heaven, and the seers and sages too — know my word to be true. Austerity of the sāttvika kind belongs to the gods and to ascetics who keep the seed upward; the rājasa kind to the demons, and likewise to men; the tāmasa kind to the rākṣasas and to men of cruel deeds. Exhaling, inhaling, and retention — breath-control is held to be of three sorts; (and there is) knowledge of the movement of the channels, and restraint (of the senses) in withdrawal. Having obtained human birth, which accomplishes heaven and liberation, he who does not practise what is good for himself grieves long after death. He who does not accomplish the permanent by means of this impermanent body — for him the permanent is lost, and the impermanent perishes as well. Those by whom the name 'Śiva' has been uttered, and likewise 'Hara, Hara' — they have no fear of hell nor of Yama, O best of sages.
