But this is the ninth of them, an island encompassed by the ocean; a thousand yojanas (in extent) is this island from south to north. The Narmadā, the Surasā and the rest — seven, and others by the thousand — great rivers arising from the Vindhya, auspicious, carriers-away of all sin. Having obtained human birth, and having at some time sported in the supreme-Self form of Śambhu, (leaving) all the fruits that are born of action, I shall indeed go to that subtle state of his. Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras (dwell) there, O best of sages. In its midst is a very great tree, equal to the wish-granting tree; and likewise gods, gandharvas, yakṣas, kiṃpuruṣas and the rest. There indeed are the four classes, each intent on its own observance: Gaurī and Kumudvatī, Sandhyā, Rātri, Manojavā, Śānti and Puṇḍarīkā — these drink the auspicious water. There the great rainfall is twofold, and here the Mānasa (lake) is renowned. It rises upward five thousand yojanas. Just as, from the conjunction of fire placed beneath, (water) standing in a pot (rises), O best of sages, so at the waxing of the moon the water certainly moves upward.
