He in whose dug-out reservoir cows drink, and brahmins and good men always (drink) — it carries across his whole lineage. A tank is the supreme refuge of beings of the four kinds; all such things as tanks bestow the highest prosperity. Kinnaras, serpents and rākṣasas, gods, gandharvas and men, and likewise the hosts of sages, take refuge in trees. By truth the gods, the fathers, men, serpents and rākṣasas — all are pleased by truthfulness, and the worlds too with all that moves and does not move. By ascetic practice heaven is attained, by ascetic practice fame is attained, by ascetic practice desire is attained; ascetic practice is the means to every end. And there is no such happiness in the world as (can be had) without ascetic practice indeed; by ascetic practice alone (comes) all happiness — so those who know the Veda know.
