By the gift of a parasol embodied beings go as if under a parasol; by the gift of a palanquin one would travel pleasantly by that as a chariot. Givers of lamps go lighting up all the directions; by the gift of shelter they go in ease, free of ailment. Even when gold, jewels, horses, great elephants, women, garlands, sandal-paste and the rest are all obtained, the hungry take no delight in them. By food is all this universe, this world, sustained, O sage; food is what makes vigour in the world, for the breaths are established in food. And the trees of a giver of food are furnished with fruits of every desire; here, as brahmins (say), (such givers) are filled with joy in the third heaven. Food, drink, a horse, a cow, clothing, a bed, a parasol and a seat: these eight gifts are especially commended in the world of the departed.
