Homage to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Homage to Śrī Gaurī and Śaṃkara. Here begins the fifth, the Umā-saṃhitā. (He) who, endowed with quality, upholds the seven worlds; who as creator resorts to rajas, and as destroyer is joined with tamas; who stands beyond māyā that is possessed of the qualities — on him let us meditate: (the one who is) truth and bliss, endless awareness, stainless, the ground of the names Brahmā and the rest, eternal, attained through the conjunction with sattva, full, Śiva.

Having asked such a meritorious question as this — namely Vyāsa, the best of sages — Sanatkumāra indeed sang the good story of Śiva: "Tell me the greatness of Śaṃkara, which gives everlasting bliss, O sage; hearing which I might, with devotion, perform the highest austerity of the Lord — (that weapon) which would split the whole earth, which would dry up the great ocean, which would bring down the entire circle of lights: of this there is no doubt; the thunderbolt, greatly blazing, sharp, with a hundred joints, most excellent; and the great bow Pināka together with the quiver, of great splendour." Taking hold of very great firmness, with folded hands and with various hymns, I, O Kṛṣṇa, became immersed in supreme bliss at the sacrifice. Śrī Śiva said: "O sage Upamanyu, dear one, you shall be free from the faults born of old age and death; be possessed of all your desires. And behold, made visible to you, the gandharvas and apsarases, and the seers and vidyādharas, and the siddhas, standing there. The all-knowing god, the self of all beings, the origin of the becoming of all beings, all-pervading, abides and is seen by all the deities."
