Shiva Purana — Kotirudra Samhita — Chapter 41

SiP 4 41.1

ṛṣaya ūcuḥ || muktirnāma tvayā proktā tasyāṃ kiṃ nu bhavediha || avasthā kīdṛśī tatra bhavediti vadasva naḥ

The sages said: Liberation has been spoken of by you; what indeed comes about in it here? Tell us what sort of state there would be there.

sūta uvāca ||| muktiścaturvidhā proktā śrūyatāṃ kathayāmi vaḥ || saṃsārakleśasaṃhartrī paramānandadāyinī

Sūta said: Liberation is declared to be of four kinds; let it be heard, I shall tell you — (it is) the destroyer of the afflictions of transmigration, the giver of supreme bliss.

sārūpyā caiva sālokyā sānnidhyā ca tathā parā || sāyujyā ca caturthī sā vratenānena yā bhavet

Sārūpya (same form), and sālokya (same world), and sānnidhya (nearness), and then the further one, sāyujya (union), which is the fourth — that which comes about by this vow.

SiP 4 41.4

mukterdātā muniśreṣṭhāḥ kevalaṃ śiva ucyate|| brahmādyā na hi te jñeyā kevalaṃ ca trivargadāḥ viṣṇunā tacca na jñātaṃ brahmaṇā na ca tattathā || kumārādyaiśca na jñātaṃ na jñātaṃ nāradena vai sā bhaktirvividhā jñeyā saguṇā nirguṇā dvijāḥ || vaidhī svābhāvikī yāyā varā sāsā smṛtā parā

The giver of liberation, O best of sages, is said to be Śiva alone; for Brahmā and the rest are not to be regarded (as such), they only bestow the three aims (of life). That was not known by Viṣṇu, nor was it so known by Brahmā, nor was it known by Kumāra and the others, nor indeed was it known by Nārada. That devotion is to be known as manifold, with attributes and without attributes, O twice-born: the prescribed (vaidhī) and the spontaneous (svābhāvikī) — whichever is the better one, that is remembered as the higher.

SiP 4 41.5

brahmādyāstriguṇādhīśāśśivastriguṇataḥ paraḥ || nirvikārī parabrahma turyaḥ prakṛtitaḥ paraḥ

Brahmā and the others are lords of the three guṇas; Śiva is beyond the three guṇas — changeless, the supreme Brahman, the fourth, beyond primal nature.

SiP 4 41.6

jñānarūpo'vyayaḥ sākṣī jñānagamyo'dvayassvayam || kaivalyamuktidasso'tra trivargasya prado'pi hi

He is of the nature of knowledge, imperishable, the witness, reached through knowledge, himself without a second; here he is the giver of the liberation that is kaivalya (absoluteness), and also the bestower of the three aims (of life).

SiP 4 41.7

kaivalyākhyā paṃcamī ca durlabhā sarvathā nṛṇām || tallakṣaṇaṃ pravakṣyāmi śrūyatāmṛṣisattamāḥ

And the fifth, called kaivalya, is in every way hard for men to obtain; I shall declare its characteristic — let it be heard, O most excellent sages.

SiP 4 41.8

utpadyate yataḥ sarvaṃ yenaitatpālyate jagat || yasmiṃśca līyate taddhi yena sarvamidaṃ tatam

That from which all arises, by which this world is protected, and in which it dissolves, by which all this is pervaded —

SiP 4 41.9

tadeva śivarūpaṃ hi paṭhyate ca munīśvarāḥ || sakalaṃ niṣkalaṃ ceti dvividhaṃ vedavarṇitam

That very (reality) is indeed recited as the form of Śiva, O lords of sages; and it is described by the Veda as twofold: as with parts (sakala) and without parts (niṣkala).

SiP 4 41.11

śukena vyāsa putreṇa vyāsena ca munīśvaraiḥ| tatpūrvaiścākhilairdevairvedaiḥ śāstraistathā na hi

By Śuka, the son of Vyāsa, and by Vyāsa, O lords of sages, and by all the gods before them, and by the Vedas and the scriptures — (it is) not (fully known) at all.

SiP 4 41.12

satyaṃ jñānamanaṃtaṃ ca saccidānandasaṃjñitam|| nirguṇo nirupādhiścāvyayaḥ śuddho niraṃjanaḥ

(It is) truth, knowledge, and the infinite, designated as being-consciousness-bliss; without qualities, without limiting condition, unchanging, pure, unstained.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.13

na rakto naiva pītaśca na śveto nīla eva ca || na hrasvo na ca dīrghaśca na sthūlassūkṣma eva ca

(It is) not red, nor yellow, not white nor indeed blue; not short and not long, not gross and not subtle either.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.14

yato vāco nivartaṃte aprāpya manasā saha|| tadeva paramaṃ proktaṃ brahmaiva śivasaṃjñakam

That from which words turn back, failing to reach (it), together with the mind — that alone is declared the supreme, the very Brahman that bears the name Śiva.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.15

ākāśaṃ vyāpakaṃ yadvattathaiva vyāpakantvidam|| māyātītaṃ parātmānaṃ dvandvātītaṃ vimatsaram

Just as space is all-pervading, so too is this pervading; beyond māyā, the supreme Self, beyond the pairs (of opposites), free of ill-will.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.16

tatprāptiśca bhavedatra śivajñānodayāddhruvam || bhajanādvā śivasyaiva sūkṣmamatyā satāṃ dvijāḥ

And the attainment of that comes about here, assuredly, from the arising of knowledge of Śiva, or else from the worship of Śiva alone, through the subtle understanding of the good, O twice-born ones.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.17

jñānaṃ tu duṣkaraṃ loke bhajanaṃ sukaraṃ matam || tasmācchivaṃ ca bhajata muktyarthamapi sattamāḥ

But knowledge is hard to achieve in the world, while worship is held to be easy; therefore worship Śiva, even (if it be) for the sake of liberation, O best of beings.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.18

śivo hi bhajanādhīno jñānātmā mokṣadaḥ paraḥ || bhaktyaiva bahavaḥ siddhā muktiṃ prāpuḥ parāṃ mudā

For Śiva is dependent on worship; he whose nature is knowledge, the giver of release, the supreme. By devotion alone many became perfected and joyfully attained the highest liberation.

SiP 4 41.19

jñānamātā śaṃbhubhaktirmuktibhuktipradā sadā || sulabhā yatprasādāddhi satpremāṃkura lakṣaṇā

Devotion to Śambhu is the mother of knowledge, ever bestowing liberation and enjoyment, easy to obtain — for by his grace indeed (it comes) — and marked by the sprouting of true love.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.21

naiṣṭhikyanaiṣṭhikībhedādvividhaiva hi kīrtitā|| ṣaḍvidhā naiṣṭhikī bhedāddvitīyaikavidhā smṛtā

By the division into the steadfast (naiṣṭhikī) and the non-steadfast it is proclaimed as just twofold; the steadfast is sixfold by subdivision, the second is held to be of a single kind.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.22

vihitāvihitābhedāttāmanekāṃ vidurbudhāḥ || tayorbahuvidhatvācca vistāro na hi varṇyate

By the division into prescribed and non-prescribed the wise know it (the second kind) as manifold; and because those two are of many kinds, their full extent is not described.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.23

te navāṃge ubhe jñeye śravaṇādikabhedataḥ || suduṣkare tatprasādaṃ vinā ca sukare tataḥ

Both of these are to be known as nine-limbed, by the divisions of hearing (of the Lord) and the rest; very hard without his grace, and easy through it.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.24

bhaktijñāne na bhinne hi śaṃbhunā varṇite dvijāḥ || tasmādbhedo na kartavyastatkartussarvadā sukham

Devotion and knowledge are not two different things — so were they described by Śambhu, O twice-born ones; therefore no distinction should be made, (and) for one who does that there is happiness always.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.25

vijñānaṃ na bhavatyeva dvijā bhaktivirodhinaḥ || śaṃbhubhaktikarasyaiva bhavejjñānodayo drutam

Discerning knowledge does not arise at all, O twice-born ones, for one who is opposed to devotion; only for one who performs devotion to Śambhu does the dawning of knowledge come swiftly.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.26

tasmādbhaktirmaheśasya sādhanīyā munīśvarāḥ || tayaiva nikhilaṃ siddhaṃ bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ

Therefore devotion to Maheśa is to be cultivated, O lords of sages; by that alone everything will be accomplished — there is no doubt.

AI translation rendered from the Sanskrit, not a published edition

SiP 4 41.27

iti pṛṣṭaṃ bhavadbhiryattadeva kathitaṃ mayā || tacchutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate nātra saṃśayaḥ

Thus what was asked by you, just that has been told by me; hearing it, one is freed from all sins — there is no doubt in this.
