Long ago there was in a forest a certain Bhilla, Gurudruha by name, a householder, strong, cruel, devoted to cruel deeds. — Then, by the working of fate, nothing at all was obtained by him; the sun had then reached its setting, and he indeed fell into distress. — The worship of Śiva took place in the very first watch (of the night); and by the greatness of that, his sin was then washed away. — Sūta said: Though thus addressed by her, when the hunter did not heed her words, then she, greatly astonished and afraid, spoke words again. — That doe, seeing him, said: What are you doing, forest-dweller? He told (her) as before; hearing that, the doe spoke again. — Realising the delay, alarmed and intent on searching for it, in that watch he then saw a deer that had come by the water-path. — The hunter said: Whoever have come here, all of them (spoke) as you (do); having spoken they went away from here, and even now the deceivers do not come. — And the doe who was the eldest there spoke these words to her lord: Without you, deer, how will the young ones stay here? — Śiva said: Hearing these words of theirs, the hunter was filled with amazement; by the power of the worship of Śiva he attained knowledge that is hard to obtain. — Śiva said: Listen, hunter: today enjoy divine pleasures as you desire, taking up residence in the supreme royal capital in the city of Śṛṅgavera. — Austerities of many kinds and repetitions of prayers many times over — these do not attain equality with the Śivarātri observance.
