As she was following her, she (Gaṅgā) spoke to her constantly — Gaṅgā, the best of rivers, the goddess, bearing a beautiful body: "I, Gaṅgā, have come because of your devotion, O you of pure smile; I have become subject to (you): choose what you wish." — Seeing the dried-up trees and the directions grown very harsh, the best of seers said to her, "Rain has not come again. If it is indeed seen thus, then it is (caused) by me and not otherwise." Hearing that speech of his, the beloved of (her) husband replied, "And the nature of the great ones — one should not abandon it without accepting it." And being addressed thus, joining her hands, she praised her again and again. Seeing this — that great deed of wifely fidelity, free of envy — Mahādeva became gracious, at once manifest from the earth; and satisfied by those deeds the clouds then made rain. Supreme joy arose in the world, O lords of sages.
