bhuktirmuktiśca labhyeta bhaktairyena vratena vai || tadvada tvaṃ viśeṣeṇa vyāsaśiṣya namo'stu te daśa śaivavratānyāhurjābālaśrutipāragāḥ || tāni vratāni yatnena kāryāṇyeva dvijaissadā caturṣvapi baliṣṭhaṃ hi śivarātrivrataṃ hare|| tasmāttadeva kartavyaṃ bhuktimuktiphalepsubhiḥ evaṃ saṃkalpamāsthāya pūjādravyaṃ samāharet|| susthale caiva yalliṃgaṃ prasiddhaṃ cāgameṣu vai kāryaṃ jāgaraṇaṃ prītyā mahotsava samanvitam || prātaḥ snātvā punastatra sthāpayetpūjayecchivam śatamaṣṭottaraṃ mantraṃ paṭhitvā jaladhārayā || pūjayecca śivaṃ tatra nirguṇaṃ guṇarūpiṇam punardvitīye yāme ca saṃkalpaṃ susamā caret || athavaikadaiva saṃkalpya kuryātpūjāṃ tathāvidhām māṣaiḥ priyaṃgubhirmudgaissaptadhānyaistathāthavā || śaṃkhīpuṣpairbilvapatraiḥ pūjayetparameśvaram anenaivopavāsena yajjātaṃ phalameva ca || tenaiva prīyatāṃ devaḥ śaṃkaraḥ sukhadāyakaḥ

By what observance indeed may devotees obtain enjoyment and liberation? Tell that particularly, O disciple of Vyāsa; homage be to you. Those versed in the Jābāla scripture declare ten Śaiva observances; those observances must always be performed with effort by the twice-born. Among the four, the Śivarātri observance is the most powerful, O Hari; therefore that very one should be performed by those desiring the fruit of enjoyment and liberation. Having thus made the resolve, one should collect the materials of worship. And where in a good place there is a liṅga well known in the Āgamas, there a night-vigil should be kept with love, accompanied by a great festival. In the morning, having bathed, one should again install (the liṅga) there and worship Śiva. Having recited the mantra a hundred and eight times, with a stream of water one should worship Śiva there, the attributeless one who takes the form of attributes. Again in the second watch one should duly make the resolve; or else, having resolved once only, one should perform worship of that kind. With black gram, with priyaṅgu, with mung beans, or else with the seven grains, with śaṅkhī flowers and bilva leaves, one should worship the Supreme Lord. And by whatever fruit arises from this very fast, may the god Śaṃkara, giver of happiness, be pleased thereby.
