Having made an excellent pit in the ground and set the fire in it, O twice-born, and having installed Śiva in its presence, he performed the oblation. The Lord, having made the heads as before and free from injury, granted from that his heart's desire — incomparable, supreme strength. That liṅga came to be named Vaidyanātheśvara, O sage, famed in the three worlds, bestowing enjoyment and liberation upon the good. "What shall we do? And where shall we go? Or what will happen? The wicked one has gained his capacity — what will he not accomplish against us?" In the hot season amid five fires, in the rains lying on the bare ground, in the cold standing within water — thus threefold austerity was performed. And just as he had begun to cut off the tenth (head), O best of sages, at that moment Hara himself appeared there in the form of light. Sūta said: Hearing that speech of his, the divine sage became agitated, and laughing inwardly, Nārada spoke to Rāvaṇa. Girijā said: The fruit of a good pupil has come about, and it has come about rightly from the pupil: that incomparable strength was given to one of calm soul and great heroism.

Thus he performed much austerity, yet even then (Śiva) was not pleased; for the Supreme Self, the great Lord, is hard to propitiate by the evil-minded. And one head after another was cut off in due rite in the worship of Śiva; when in this good sequence nine had been severed by him —
