That stream issued forth from the branch of the udumbara tree; there the renowned sage Gautama joyfully bathed. Sūta said: Then a voice of the Gaṅgā arose from the vault of the sky; hear it, O best of sages, the excellent speech of the Gaṅgā. Then she appeared there again for his pleasure, and that became the excellent and celebrated shrine (called) Kuśāvarta. Then Gautama, seeing a cow intent on eating his grain, struck her with a blade of grass, gently driving her off. "May you have no pleasure in the rite of worshipping Śiva and the rest, nor ever in devotees fixed on Śiva, nor at Śiva's festival days." Next I shall proclaim the greatness of the jyotirliṅga of Vaidyanātheśvara; let it be heard — it takes away sin.
