Having praised (him) much and bowed to the Lord, he stood with hands folded in salutation: "Make me free of sin, O God" — thus said that Gautama. Sūta said: Having said this to him, the Lord Śaṅkara then spoke much of the misconduct of those (brahmins), O brahmins — he who gives good things (to the good) and punishment to the wicked. Sūta said: Having said this, taking hold of his lotus feet, Gautama made obeisance to the Lord of gods, out of desire for (the good of) the world. Sūta said: Having heard that speech of his, of the Lord Śaṅkara, the Ganges, that purifying best of rivers, answered again. The gods said: If you are pleased, O Lord of gods, and you are pleased, O best of rivers, then you must remain here out of compassion, for our sake and likewise for the sake of men. That Ganges (became renowned) by the name Gautamī, and the liṅga was called Tryambaka; she became renowned and it became renowned, destroying great sins.
