Sūta said: And that rākṣasa, having heard that, enraged, wishing to kill him, took a sword and went towards the king. "Surely the compassionate Śaṃkara here is present in the earthen (liṅga); (yet) here he does nothing for my sake. Whence, and who, is this rākṣasa? As long as Śaṃkara, your protector, has not been seen by me, so long you serve (him), thinking (him) your master — never otherwise." Sūta said: Having spoken thus, taking his army and threatening that king, he then hurled the dreadful sword at the earthen (liṅga). And all the gods and the sages became exceedingly distressed, and said to one another: "Śiva was indeed prayed to in vain. Ghosts, spirits, goblins and the like would go far away from that (liṅga); so that (aim) is not accomplished, and what (was desired) does not come about from it, O twice-born ones."
