Formerly, O twice-born, there was a rākṣasa named Bhīma, of great valour, a giver of pain to all beings, always a destroyer of dharma. Karkaṭī said: Your father was Kumbhakarṇa, the younger brother of Rāvaṇa; he, of great strength, was slain by Rāma together with his brother. By him my father was killed, and likewise my maternal grandfather; Virādha too was slain by him — very much sorrow was caused. Bhīma said: If you are pleased, O lord of gods, if a boon is to be granted by you, then give me today matchless strength, O you who are seated on the lotus. And the king, most righteous, loving dharma, dear to Hara, was seized by him with fetters and set apart in a solitary place. Having destroyed all of it — the dharma of the Vedas, the dharma of the śāstras, the dharma of the smṛtis, and that born of the purāṇas — he, grown mighty, enjoyed (all) himself. The powerful rākṣasa, son of Karkaṭī, born of Kumbhakarṇa, made mighty by the boon granted by Brahmā, oppresses the gods without ceasing.
