Somanātha is proclaimed the first of them; hear, O sage, his greatness first, attentively. And Dakṣa, having heard thus, then obtained sorrow; the twice-born came together and then spoke words to the Moon for appeasement. Then all the divine sages (said), "What is to be done? Alas, how will it turn out?" Thus, fallen into sorrow, they became distraught, O sage. And she said, "Whose again is this embryo? It is the Moon's." Afterwards she was taken by him, though restrained by me. And the Moon, having encompassed the mantra to the measure of ten crores (of repetitions), meditating on the Mṛtyuñjaya mantra, stood with unwavering mind. And he (Śiva) was pleased, for the sake of the glory of the field (kṣetra) of the gods and for the fame of the Moon: there, by the Moon's name, Śaṅkara (became known). And they, circumambulating that holy place and praising it, departed; and the Moon too performed his own ancient duty.
