Sūta said: I too have heard from Vyāsa the account of the difference of the kalpas, O twice-born ones; that very (account) I now relate — let it be heard, O best of sages. Naked, of exceeding splendour, adorned with the ornament of ashes, he performed a wicked act, holding the liṅga in his hand. And it went to the netherworld, and to heaven likewise, and on the earth it went everywhere; nowhere indeed was it steady. Sūta said: Thus addressed, the sages bowed and said to Brahmā: "What is to be done by us, O ordainer? Instruct (us in) that task. Be gracious, O lord of gods, O gladdener of the world; you are the maker, the protector, and you are the destroyer, you who are without syllable. All the gods and sages worshipped Śiva especially — Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and the others, and the three worlds with (all) that moves and does not move."
