SiP 3 8.1

अथ भैरवावतारमाह ।। नन्दीश्वर उवाच।। सनत्कुमार सर्व्वज्ञ शृणु त्वं भैरवीं कथाम् ।। यस्याः श्रवणमात्रेण शैवी भक्तिर्दृढा भवेत्

Now he tells the descent of Bhairava. Nandīśvara said: Sanatkumāra, all-knowing one, listen to the story of Bhairava, by the mere hearing of which devotion to Śiva becomes firm.

bhairavaḥ pūrṇarūpo hi śaṃkarasya parātmanaḥ || mūḍhāstaṃ vai na jānanti mohitāśśivamāyayā

For Bhairava is the full form of Śaṃkara, the supreme Self; but fools do not know him, deluded as they are by Śiva's māyā.

Sanatkumāra, (no one) knows the greatness of the Great Lord—neither Viṣṇu, though four-armed, nor Vidhi (Brahmā), though four-faced. The divine sages said: God of gods, lord of creatures, maker of creation, leader of the worlds, tell us truly: what is the one imperishable Reality? They are to be asked especially, and those (Vedas) stood there bearing forms; the two who know the standards of proof asked them. Having spoken thus, all four (Vedas replied), and Vidhi and Hari said: O Vedas, what is this you are saying, out of your senses? What has happened to you today, that all your excellent higher knowledge is lost? But before Vidhi could take it in, that three-eyed one—the Great Person, dark-red—was seen in an instant. That city of my liberation, Kāśī, which is weightier than all others—the overlordship of it is yours always, O King of Time. Reassuring those two, the Great God, pleased, fond of those who bow to him, spoke to that other form of his own, Bhairava with the matted braid.

citramatra na kiñcidvai durjñeyā khalu śāmbhavī || tayā saṃmohitāssarve nārcayantyapi tamparam

There is nothing at all surprising in this: Śambhu's (māyā) is indeed hard to know. All are utterly deluded by her, and do not even worship that Supreme One.

sarvvago'pi maheśāno nekṣyate mūḍhabuddhibhiḥ|| devavad budhyate loke yo'tīto manasāṃ girām

Though the Great Lord is all-pervading, he is not seen by those of dull understanding; he who is beyond minds and words is thought of in the world as (just) a god.
