(He was) the best of bowmen, a hero, a brahmin-sage knowing all the sciences, of vast fame, of great splendour, the foremost of all who know the weapons. Hearing that speech of Śambhu, Droṇa then, bowing low, said: "Give (me) as son one born of your own portion, unconquerable by all, of great strength, so that, having destroyed the sons of the Pāṇḍavas though they are carefully trained, his strength may be unstoppable by the great heroes, Kṛṣṇa and the rest, and by enemies." Although the Brahmaśiras weapon is unfailing and irresistible, it was at once quelled by the fiery power of the Śaiva weapon, O great sage. Then Droṇa's son, with a gracious mind, gave out of affection many boons to the Pāṇḍavas and to Kṛṣṇa himself — he, having favoured (them), Aśvatthāman.
