Nandīśvara said: Hear now of the eleven excellent incarnations of Śaṅkara, on hearing which one is not afflicted by afflictions arising from Satya (?) and the rest. And Maheśvara, greatly pleased, fond of his devotees, said, "Ask a boon," to Kaśyapa, the tiger among sages, his own devotee.

Sorely oppressed by the demons, those gods went into the presence of Kaśyapa; with folded hands and bowed shoulders they saluted him, being greatly distraught. Then Śambhu, friend of the wretched, refuge of the good, appeared before that seer, whose mind was attached to his feet, in order to grant a boon. "Becoming my son, O Lord — the gods and yakṣas have been defeated by the mighty demons, O Śambhu; be the giver of joy to the gods." Even today all those great Rudras, having Śiva's own form, shine forever in heaven for the protection of the gods.
