When formerly the nectar was being churned from the milk-ocean by gods and demons, from it there arose out of fire a poison with the brilliance of the fire of time. The gods alone drank it, not the demons, through Hari's compassion. Then there arose a very great jewel, a cause of mutual quarrel among them. Yakṣeśvara said: For what purpose do you all stand here, O gods, facing one another? Tell (me) the whole matter — what is it? Tell the reason to me who ask. Then there was a voice from the sky that took away the gods' astonishment: This Yakṣa, O gods, is Śaṃkara, the remover of all pride. Thus has that incarnation of Śambhu been described, the bringer of happiness, called Yakṣeśvara, giver of joy, pleased with the good, granter of fearlessness.
