Śuciṣmatī too, stricken with pain, wept most unbearably, with a piercing voice and wailing cries, her senses utterly distraught. Nandīśvara said: Having heard his words, the brahmin couple, scorched (with grief), their burning (relieved) by floods of untimely tears, then said: "Go, son, for refuge to Śiva, the one maker of Brahmā and the rest, the cloud-borne, the imperishable, the jewel of protection of the universe." He took up terrible observances, hard to perform for those whose selves are unperfected, with a hundred and eight auspicious pots filled with the water of the Gaṅgā. Gṛhapati said: "Be gone, ignoble lord of Ahalyā, cleaver of mountains, Pākaśāsana! Plainly I do not petition any other deity than Paśupati." Īśvara said: "Child Gṛhapati! Ah, from Śakra with the thunderbolt raised in his hand — it is known, you are afraid; do not fear, this testing of you was made by me." "Those who enter the fire, firm in courage, their senses subdued, or women endowed with courage — all of them are of the splendour of fire."
