Long ago, on the lovely bank of the Narmadā, in the city called Narmapura, there was a sage Viśvānara, a devotee of Purāri (Śiva) and holy of soul. "Such, O Lord, is my petition, long settled in my heart; it is fitting for householders, and you ought to grant me this." Having quickly reached Vārāṇasī and seen that Maṇikarṇikā (pool), he cast off the threefold affliction, even that amassed in a hundred births. "I too, worshipping Vīreśa here at the three times of day, shall soon obtain a son, just as my wife desires." Seeing him and being filled with joy, the sage, the hairs of his body bristling, uttered aloud the words of his heart, "Homage be (to you)," again and again. Nandīśvara said: Having praised (him) thus, the brahmin fell upon the ground, and while he remained here with his palms joined, that boy — grown old, older than the strength of the foe(?) — exceedingly delighted, spoke to the brahmin: "It brings about the attainment of heaven and of release, there is no doubt of it; for this (hymn) equals all hymns and ever grants every wish."
