Shiva Purana — Shatarudra Samhita — Chapter 10

SiP 3 10.1

naṃdīśvara uvāca || vidhvaṃsī dakṣayajñasya vīrabhadrāhvayaḥ prabho || avatāraśca vijñeyaḥ śivasya paramātmanaḥ pṛthvyuddhāre vidhātrā va prārthito hi purā prabhuḥ || hiraṇyākṣaṃ jaghānāsau viṣṇurvārāharūpadhṛk

Nandīśvara said: The destroyer of Dakṣa's sacrifice, named Vīrabhadra, O lord, is also to be known as an incarnation of Śiva, the Supreme Self. Formerly the Lord was entreated by the Creator for the raising up of the earth; he, Viṣṇu, taking the form of a boar, slew Hiraṇyākṣa.

ataḥ paraṃ muniśreṣṭha bhavatsnehādbravīmi tat|| śārdūlākhyāvatāraṃ ca śaṅkarasya prabhoḥ śṛṇu hiraṇyakaśipuścādyo hiraṇyākṣo'nujo balī || devarṣipārṣadau jātau tau dvāvapi ditessutau mahāyuddhaṃ tayorāsīnmuhūrttammunisattamāḥ || vikarālaṃ ca bhayadaṃ sarveṣāṃ romaharṣaṇam tathāpi na nivṛtā ruḍjvālā narahareryadā || iṣṭaṃ prāptāstato devāśśaṃkara śaraṇaṃ yayuḥ gato maccharaṇaṃ yastu tasya duḥkhaṃ kṣayaṃ gatam || matpriyaḥ śaraṇāpannaḥ prāṇebhyo'pi na saṃśayaḥ

Beyond this, O best of sages, out of affection for you I shall tell that: hear too of the incarnation called Śārdūla (the tiger) of the Lord Śaṅkara. Hiraṇyakaśipu was the elder, Hiraṇyākṣa the younger, mighty; both, sons of Diti, were born as attendants of the divine seer. There was a great battle between the two for a while, O best of sages, exceedingly frightful, terrifying, making everyone's hair bristle. Even so, when the blaze of the wrath of the Man-Lion did not subside, the gods, having obtained their wish, then went to Śaṅkara for refuge. Whoever has come to my refuge, his suffering has gone to destruction; one who has taken refuge is dearer to me than my own life-breaths, no doubt.

saṅkhyā viśakyate kartuṃ suprājñairbahujanmabhiḥ || śivāvatārāṇāṃ naiva satyaṃ jānīhi madvacaḥ
