Homage to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Now the third, the Śatarudra Saṃhitā, is begun. I praise Maheśvara, of great bliss, of endless play, the all-pervading, the great one, the beloved of Gaurī, the source from whom Kārtika and the king of obstacles (Gaṇeśa) arose, Śaṃkara, the primal god. Śaunaka said: O greatly fortunate disciple of Vyāsa, Sūta, treasury of knowledge and compassion, tell of the incarnations of Śambhu, by which he did good to the virtuous.

etatpṛṣṭaḥ purā nandī śivamūrtissatāṃ gatiḥ || sanatkumāreṇa mune tamuvāca śivaṃ smaran sunando nandanaścaiva viśvanandopanandanau || śiṣyāstasya mahātmāno yaistadbrahma samāvṛtam japitvā tu mahādevīṃ sarvalokanamaskṛtām|| prasannastu mahādevo dhyānayuktena cetasā evaṃbhūtā mahātmāno brahmaṇaḥ sṛṣṭihetave || yogaṃ pravarttayā māsurghorākhyaṃ mahadadbhutam īśānaḥ śivarūpaśca garīyānprathamaḥ smṛtaḥ || bhoktāraṃ prakṛteḥ sākṣātkṣetrajñamadhitiṣṭhati yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi sadyādīnāṃ samudbhavam|| sa bhuktvā sakalānkāmānprayāti paramāṃ gatim

Formerly Nandin, the very form of Śiva, the refuge of the good, was asked this by Sanatkumāra, O sage, and, remembering Śiva, he spoke to him. Sunanda and Nandana, and Viśvananda and Upanandana — these were his great-souled disciples, by whom that Brahman was encompassed. Having recited (the name of) the Great Goddess, to whom all the worlds bow, the great god was pleased, with a mind fixed in meditation. Such great-souled ones, for the sake of Brahmā's creation, set in motion the yoga called Ghora, great and wondrous. Īśāna, whose form is Śiva, weightier (than all), is held to be the first; he presides directly over the enjoyer of primal matter, the knower of the field. Whoever recites or hears the origin of Sadyojāta and the rest — he, having enjoyed all desires, goes to the supreme goal.
