SiP 2 96.1

|| ṛṣaya ūcuḥ || jagatpitā śivaḥ prokto jaganmātā śivā matā || tasmāddeyā tvayā kanyā śaṃkarāya mahātmane

The sages said: Śiva is declared the father of the world, Śivā is held to be the mother of the world; therefore the girl should be given by you to the great-souled Śaṃkara.

Doing so, O snow mountain, your birth would become meaningful; for you will become the teacher of the teacher of the world — there is no doubt. For all those seven sages, having indeed praised Śiva's māyā, then sent Arundhatī to that Menakā. For the destruction of Tāraka (Brahmā) with effort entreated the Lord of all, who asks nothing, in the matter of forming a marriage connection. Speech is of three kinds, O mountain — in worldly usage and also in the Veda; one who knows the scriptures knows it all with the eye of spotless knowledge. And Brahmā dwelling in the Brahmā-world, Viṣṇu who makes his abode in the milk-ocean, Hara whose seat is Kailāsa — all are manifestations of Śiva. Having consoled her and granted a boon, he went to his own dwelling. By force of that entreaty Śambhu asked you, O mountain, for Śivā. Men versed in the science of polity quickly instructed him, and the elders, the best of kinsmen, frightened by Brahmā's curse.

And I too have become fallen from understanding — the truth is being told: I do not wish to give my daughter to Maheśa, who has the form of a beggar. Brahmā said: Having said this, the king of mountains, bewildered by Śiva's māyā, stood there and fell silent in the midst of the sages, O sage.
