What did Śambhu do, father, having come to grant a boon? And in how much time, and how? Tell that, bringing (me) delight. The seven sages said: God of gods, Mahādeva, ocean of compassion, lord, we have become truly fortunate, in that we are now remembered by you. Bowing to her with their hearts, those seven sages of good vows, humbled and especially honoured, spoke these words: Nārada is a crooked speaker and a churner of others' minds; from hearing his talk loss comes about in every way. Having given Prahlāda his own instructions, he then gave sorrow to Hiraṇyakaśipu, this splitter of others' minds. Having in just that way given her the fault, the lord himself abandoned (it), meditating on his own form, partless, sorrowless, passionless, happy. Those in whose heart there is no conviction that the word of the gurus is true — for them there is sorrow both here and hereafter, and nowhere any happiness. Brahmā said: Having said this and swiftly bowing to those sages, she, the mountain's daughter, fell silent, remembering Śiva with an unwavering mind.

pārvatyuvāca || satyaṃ bhavadbhiḥ kathitaṃ svajñānena munīśvarāḥ || paraṃtu me haṭho naiva mukto bhavati vai dvijāḥ

Pārvatī said: What you have said out of your own knowledge is true, lords of sages; but my stubbornness, O twice-born, is simply not to be given up.

स्वतनोः शैलजातत्वात्काठिन्यं सहजं स्थितम् ।। इत्थं विचार्य सुधिया मां निषेद्धुं न चार्हथ

svatanoḥ śailajātatvātkāṭhinyaṃ sahajaṃ sthitam || itthaṃ vicārya sudhiyā māṃ niṣeddhuṃ na cārhatha

Since my own body was born of a mountain, hardness is innate (in me). Reflecting thus with a good mind, you ought not to hold me back.

surarṣervacanaṃ pathyaṃ tyakṣye naiva kadācana || gurūṇāṃ vacanaṃ pathyamiti vedavido viduḥ

The word of the divine sage is salutary; I shall never abandon it. Those who know the Veda know that the word of elders is salutary.

gurūṇāṃ vacanaṃ satyamiti yeṣāṃ dṛḍhā matiḥ || teṣāmihāmutra sukhaṃ paramaṃ nāsukhaṃ kvacit

Those whose conviction is firm that the word of elders is true—for them there is supreme happiness here and hereafter, and nowhere any unhappiness.

sarvathā na parityājyaṃ gurūṇāṃ vacanaṃ dvijāḥ|| gṛhaṃ vasedvā śūnyaṃ syānme haṭhassukhadassadā

In no way is the word of elders to be abandoned, O twice-born. Whether (my) house be inhabited or become empty, my stubbornness will always give me happiness.

yadbhavadbhissubhaṇitaṃ vacanaṃ munisattamāḥ || tadanyathā tadvivekaṃ varṇayāmi samāsataḥ

As for the speech well spoken by you, O best of sages, it is otherwise; I shall set forth briefly the discrimination of that matter.

guṇālayo vihārī ca viṣṇussatyaṃ prakīrtitaḥ || sadāśivo'guṇaḥ proktastatra kāraṇa mucyate

Viṣṇu is truly proclaimed to be an abode of qualities and one who sports; Sadāśiva is said to be without qualities—the reason for that is now told.

शिवो ब्रह्माविकारः स भक्तहेतोर्धृताकृतिः ।। प्रभुतां लौकिकीं नैव संदर्शयितुमिच्छति।

śivo brahmāvikāraḥ sa bhaktahetordhṛtākṛtiḥ || prabhutāṃ laukikīṃ naiva saṃdarśayitumicchati|

Śiva is Brahman, unchanging; he has assumed a form for the sake of his devotees. He does not at all wish to display worldly lordliness.

bhūṣūṇādirucirmāyārliptānāṃ brahmaṇo na ca|| sa prabhurnirguṇo'jo nirmāyo'lakṣyagatirvirāṭ

A taste for ornaments and the like belongs to those smeared with māyā, not to Brahman. That Lord is without qualities, unborn, free of māyā, of imperceptible course, all-pervading.
