Then, taking her two companions, Jayā and Vijayā, she made inquiry of her mother and father through the two companions. Brahmā said: Having heard the words thus spoken by (her) father, the two companions then went to the mother, being so commanded by her, together with her. "Where are you going to perform austerity? The gods are (present) in my house, and all the sacred fords and the various holy places (as well)." Casting off her necklace and putting on an excellent deerskin, she went there for austerity, toward Gaṅgāvataraṇa. In the hot season, having made a fire blazing all around her day and night, she stood in the midst of it, constantly reciting the mantra. Standing on one foot, Pārvatī remained, calling Śiva to mind; and reciting the five-syllabled mantra she performed great austerity. Meditating thus continually, she performed austerity for a very long time, her face downcast, unwavering, wearing matted hair and bark garments. And there the trees (became) laden with fruit, and grasses of many kinds, and many-coloured flowers were there, O best of sages.
