That instant Kāma came, with Spring, fond of Rati, proud, accompanied by Rati, the lord who conquers the three worlds. (Śakra said:) "From whom one's good arises, who is dearer than he? Therefore you, best of friends, ought to do my task." (Kāma said:) "In a moment, with the sidelong glance of a lovely woman, I will make gods, sages, demons and the rest fall — as for men, I do not count them." (Śakra said:) "The great demon named Tāraka, having obtained a wondrous boon from Brahmā, has become unconquerable and a giver of pain to all. By doing this you will be the accomplisher: all pain will perish, and your glory will endure in the world — it cannot be otherwise."
