brahmovāca || atha sā garbhamādhatta varāṃgī tatpurādarāt || sa vavarddhābhyaṃtare hi bahuvarṣaiḥ sutejasā

Brahmā said: Then Varāṅgī conceived that (embryo) with regard for him; and it grew within, over many years, with great fiery power.

tataḥ sā samaye pūrṇe varāṃgī suṣuve sutam|| mahākāyaṃ mahāvīryaṃ prajvalaṃtaṃ diśo daśa sṛgālolūkaṭaṃkārairvamantyo mukhato'nalam || aṃtargrāmeṣu vikaṭaṃ praṇeduraśivāśśivāḥ atho sa tārako daityo mahābalaparākramaḥ || tapaḥ kartuṃ jananyāścājñāṃ yayāce mahāmanāḥ tenaiva devalokāste dagdhaprāyā babhūvire|| abhito duḥkhamāpannāssarve devarṣayo mune tvayā ca nirmite loke sakale'sminmahāprabho || mattulyo balavānnūnaṃ na bhavetko'pi vai pumān yatra yatra śubhaṃ vastu dṛṣṭaṃ tenāsureṇa hi|| tattadgṛhītaṃ tarasā nissārastribhavo'bhavat

Then, when her time was complete, Varāṅgī bore a son, huge of body, of great valour, blazing in the ten directions. Jackals and owls, vomiting fire from their mouths with shrill screeching, and inauspicious she-jackals, howled hideously inside the villages. Then that daitya Tāraka, of great strength and prowess, high-minded, begged his mother's permission to perform austerities. By him alone those worlds of the gods came to be all but burnt up; on every side all the gods and seers fell into misery, O sage. "In this whole world created by you, O great lord, surely there could be no man at all as strong as I am." Wherever a fine thing was seen by that asura, that very thing was seized by force; the three worlds were left without substance.
