Knowing of her birth, the mountain-dweller (Śiva), distressed by separation from Satī, held her within as a marvel and rejoiced exceedingly, O Nārada. In this interval the snow-mountain (Himālaya) went there, to Auṣadhiprastha, having respectfully heard of Śaṃkara's coming. (He said:) "Your play, O great Lord, is not to be known, and it gives joy to the good; you are one whose nature is subject to devotees, for you are an agent controlled by your devotees." (Śiva said:) "(Act) so that by that means my austerity here may be free of obstruction, O guardian of the mountain; by all means, O best of mountains, make a good effort now." Himālaya said: "From today let no one come to my plateau for the fetching down of Gaṅgā by my command; this I say as truth."
