|| śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ || || atha tṛtīyaḥ pārvatīkhaṇḍaḥ prārabhyate || nārada uvāca || dākṣāyaṇī satī devī tyaktadehā piturmakhe || kathaṃ girisutā brahmanbabhūva jagadambikā

Homage to Śrī Gaṇeśa. Here begins the third book, the Pārvatī-khaṇḍa. Nārada said: The goddess Satī, Dakṣa's daughter, who abandoned her body at her father's sacrifice — how, O Brahman, did she become the daughter of the mountain, the mother of the world?

kathaṃ kṛtvā tapo'tyugrampatimāpa śivaṃ ca sā || etanme pṛcchate samyakkathaya tvaṃ viśeṣataḥ nāmnā sā pārvatī devī tapaḥ kṛtvā sudussaham|| nāradasyopadeśādvai patimprāpa śivaṃ punaḥ sa eva divyarūpo hi ramyaḥ sarvāṅgasundaraḥ || viṣṇvaṃśo'vikṛtaḥ śailarājarājassatāmpriyaḥ mahāmodānvitā devāste sarve samunīśvarāḥ|| saṃjagmuḥ svasvadhāmāni saṃsmarantaḥ śivāśivau

And how, having performed most fierce austerity, did she obtain Śiva as husband? Tell me this fully and in detail, since I ask. That goddess, Pārvatī by name, having performed austerity most hard to bear, by Nārada's instruction obtained Śiva again as husband. He indeed was of divine form, lovely, beautiful in every limb; a portion of Viṣṇu, unaltered, the king over the king of mountains, dear to the good. Those gods, filled with great joy, all of them together with the lords of sages, went to their own abodes, remembering Śivā and Śiva.
