Then Indra mounted on his elephant, and Agni mounted on a goat, Yama mounted on a buffalo, and Nirṛti on a corpse. Conches and kettledrums sounded at that great festival of battle; great drums sounded, and paṭahas, ḍiṇḍimas and the rest. All the gods, Śakra and the others, having assembled there on the battlefield, then asked Bṛhaspati, bowed down in humility: "You, Indra, having become childish, have come today together with the guardians of the worlds to Dakṣa's sacrifice — what valour will you accomplish?" Then all those sages, greatly afraid, wishing to make a request of the Lord of Ramā (Viṣṇu), at once and quickly, bowing low, said: "Why have you come here? That we do not know at all. How have you come to be here at the destruction of Dakṣa's sacrifice? Tell that." "I am subject to my devotees, and so too is that Maheśvara; Dakṣa is indeed my devotee, my dear — therefore I have come here to the sacrifice." Brahmā said: Having spoken thus he fell silent and made himself ready for battle; and Vīrabhadra too, of great strength, then made himself ready with his own hosts.
