ekasmindivase devī satī rahasi saṃgatā || śivaṃ praṇamya sadbhaktyā nyasyoccaiḥ sukṛtāṃjaliḥ brahmovāca|| ityapṛcchatsma sadbhaktyā śaṃkaraṃ sā satī mune || ādiśaktirmaheśānī jīvoddhārāya kevalam vihitāvihitābhedāttāmanekāṃ vidurbudhāḥ || tayorbahuvidhatvācca tattvaṃ tvanyatra varṇitam sadā bhṛtyānukūlyena vidhinā me parātmane || arpaṇaṃ ṣoḍaśānāṃ vai pādyādīnāṃ tadarcanam kalau pratyakṣaphaladā bhaktissarvayugeṣvapi || tatprabhāvādahaṃ nityaṃ tadvaśo nātra saṃśayaḥ śaṃkaropi tadākarṇya satīṃ praśnaṃ prahṛṣṭadhīḥ || varṇayāmāsa suprītyā jīvoddhārāya kṛtsnaśaḥ

One day the goddess Satī, meeting (him) in private, bowed to Śiva with true devotion and, making a fine gesture of reverence, placed her joined palms high (on her head). Brahmā said: Thus, O sage, that Satī questioned Śaṅkara with true devotion. (Śiva said:) The primal Śakti, the great sovereign lady, (exists) solely for the deliverance of living beings. Because of the distinction between what is prescribed and what is not prescribed, the wise know her as manifold; and since these two are of many kinds, that truth has been described elsewhere. Always, in accordance with (the disposition of) my servants, worship of me, the Supreme Self, by rule consists in the offering of the sixteen (services), beginning with water for the feet. In the Kali age devotion bears visible fruit, as it does in all the ages too; by its power I am forever subject to it — there is no doubt here. Śaṅkara too, hearing that question of Satī's, with delighted mind and great affection expounded it in full, for the deliverance of living beings.

taddurlabhaṃ trilokesmiṃstajjñātā viralaḥ priye || yādṛśo yassadāsohaṃ brahmasākṣātparātparaḥ
